Best AI Agents for Ecommerce in 2026, and When a Custom Agent Wins

Bhavesh Barot - Author

A man standing at a conference table with a laptop, looking at a dashboard on a wall-mounted screen

"There is no single best AI agent for ecommerce. There is a best agent for each job: customer support, shopping help, on-site search and running the store. We compared Gorgias, Fin, Zendesk, Klaviyo, Rep AI, Alhena, Algolia and Shopify Sidekick using their own pricing pages and docs, then did the math on when a custom agent costs less."

Key Takeaways

  • 1Pick the agent by job, not by brand. Support: Gorgias AI Agent for Shopify brands or Fin across helpdesks. Shopping help: Rep AI or Alhena. Search: Algolia. Store admin: Shopify Sidekick, which is included with Shopify plans.
  • 2Vendors bill different units, so compare a month, not a rate card. Fin charges $0.99 per outcome, Gorgias $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction, Alhena counts AI conversations and Rep AI counts store visitors (vendor pages checked September 17, 2026).
  • 3Read what counts as billable. A Fin outcome includes a handoff through a Procedure you set up, and every Gorgias automated interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket.
  • 4Shopify Sidekick works for the merchant, not the shopper. Shopify's own help center says it can't talk to your customers or handle support conversations.
  • 5In our hypothetical month of 6,000 conversations with 3,000 resolved by AI, Fin fees come to $2,970, while a custom agent on Claude Sonnet 5 uses about $378 in model calls. That gap has to pay for the build and upkeep.
  • 6A custom agent wins when answers depend on your ERP, OMS or 3PL, when B2B pricing or warranty rules decide the reply, when you must own the data path, or when a year of per-resolution fees tops the cost of building and running your own.

Quick Answer

Pick by job. Support: Gorgias AI Agent for Shopify brands, or Fin on Intercom or another helpdesk. Shopping help: Rep AI or Alhena. On-site search: Algolia. Store admin: Shopify Sidekick. Build a custom agent when answers depend on your ERP, OMS or 3PL, or on B2B pricing, or when per-resolution fees cost more than running your own.

Search for the best AI agents for ecommerce and names like Gorgias, Fin, Rep AI and Alhena come up. They are real options, but they do different jobs, bill by different units and work on different platforms. A support agent billed per resolution and a shopping assistant billed per visitor are not rivals.

This guide sorts them by job: customer support, shopping help, on-site search and back office work. We checked each vendor's own pricing page and docs on September 17, 2026. New to the terms? Read what agentic commerce is or how AI chatbots and AI agents differ. For AI that is not an agent, like copywriting tools, see the best AI for ecommerce.

Our interest: FactoryJet builds custom AI agents and sells its own commerce operator, Commerceflo by FactoryJet, and we are a registered Shopify Partner. So we have a stake in the build side of this decision. Commerceflo is listed last and described only from its product page, and we say plainly where an off-the-shelf tool is the better buy.

1. Customer Support Agents

Support is where most stores start, because the questions repeat: where is my order (often shortened to WISMO), can I return this, can I change my address. These four tools answer those questions and, on the right plan, act on them.

Gorgias AI Agent: Best for Shopify-First Brands

Gorgias is a helpdesk built for ecommerce. Its AI Agent docs say one AI Agent plays two roles: a support agent for returns, tracking and cancellations, and a shopping assistant before purchase. It works on email, chat, SMS and social channels, in more than 80 languages. The AI Agent page lists Shopify actions such as refunds, cancellations, order edits, address changes before fulfillment and starting a return, plus custom actions that call other apps.

  • Works with:one AI Agent per connected Shopify store, per Gorgias's docs. The helpdesk also connects WooCommerce on every plan, BigCommerce from Basic and Magento from Pro.
  • Pricing: Gorgias's pricing page lists the helpdesk from $10 a month (Starter, 50 tickets) to $750 a month billed annually (Advanced, 5,000 tickets). AI Agent adds $0.90 per automated interaction on annual plans or $1.00 on monthly plans, and $1.50 each past your plan's allowance.
  • Best for: Shopify and Shopify Plus brands that want one inbox, one AI agent and one bill.
  • Watch out for: each automated interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket, and if a person replies within 72 hours of an AI resolution, it is billed as a ticket instead. Actions like cancellations and discounts are not on Starter. On a non-Shopify store, confirm AI Agent coverage in a demo.

Fin (Intercom Fin): Best Across Channels and Helpdesks

Fin is the AI agent from the company that was called Intercom until May 12, 2026, when it renamed itself Fin. Intercom is still the name of its helpdesk. You train Fin on your knowledge, policies and data connectors, write Procedures for multi-step work, and run it on email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social channels. Its Shopify App Store listing says it resolves order questions using real-time data.

  • Works with:the Intercom helpdesk or your current one. Fin's pricing page names Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Dixa, Front, Zoho, Sprinklr and Gorgias.
  • Pricing: $0.99 per outcome, with a 14-day free trial. On another helpdesk there are no seat fees but a 50-outcome monthly minimum. On the Intercom helpdesk, seats cost $29, $85 or $132 a month billed annually.
  • Best for: brands that support shoppers on many channels, or want AI on a helpdesk they already use.
  • Watch out for: an outcome is not only a resolution. Fin also bills when it completes a Procedure that hands off to a person. You pay once per conversation, and handoffs without an outcome are free. Fin is a general support agent, not an ecommerce-only one. On June 15, 2026, Fin announced an agreement for Salesforce to acquire it. Its CEO says little will change for customers, but if you run Fin on another helpdesk, ask about the roadmap before you sign a long contract.

Zendesk AI Agents: Best If You Already Run Zendesk

Zendesk AI agents answer customers on messaging, email and voice, and act in other systems through actions and API integrations you configure. Zendesk is a general helpdesk. Its Shopify integration shows order details to human agents and lets them refund or cancel Shopify orders from a ticket. Getting an AI agent to do that means setting up the actions yourself.

  • Works with: Zendesk Suite and Support plans, Shopify through the integration, and other systems through APIs.
  • Pricing: seats start at $19 per agent a month for Support Team and $55 for Suite Team, billed annually. AI usage is billed per automated resolution from a dollar allowance of $2 to $10 per agent seat a month, by plan. Zendesk does not publish per-resolution rates.
  • Best for: teams already on Zendesk that would rather add AI than switch helpdesks.
  • Watch out for: Zendesk moved to resolution tiers on May 18, 2026, and says assisted escalations and contained resolutions do not count against your allowance. It also retires AI agents Essential and its legacy bot builder on December 10, 2026. Ask sales for your real rate before you commit.

Klaviyo Customer Agent: Best If Klaviyo Holds Your Customer Data

Klaviyo's Customer Agent setup guide says it works on web chat, email, SMS and WhatsApp. It tracks orders, answers product questions, recommends products, processes returns and exchanges, manages subscriptions and hands off to a person. Klaviyo says customer data is never used to train large language models.

  • Works with: Klaviyo accounts. Order tracking turns on when Shopify is connected, and returns, subscription and loyalty skills need connected tools such as Loop, Recharge or Yotpo.
  • Pricing: Klaviyo's pricing page bills it by conversations resolved without a person, with the first 50 free as a one-time trial.
  • Best for: brands already running email and SMS in Klaviyo.
  • Watch out for: custom skills and custom tools are still in open beta.

2. Shopping Assistants and Product Discovery

Shopping assistants work before the sale. They answer product questions, recommend items and guide hesitant shoppers to checkout. These two price very differently.

Rep AI: Best for Proactive Selling on Shopify

Rep AI's Shopify App Store listing describes a proactive assistant. It spots shoppers who hesitate, opens a chat to recommend products and guide them to checkout, and handles order status, returns and cancellations before handing off to live chat. It connects with Gorgias, Zendesk, Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript and Tapcart.

  • Works with: Shopify, plus WooCommerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud integrations listed on its site.
  • Pricing: by store visitors. The free Pay-as-you-Grow plan covers 100 visitors a month. Starter is $104 a month for up to 10,000 visitors, Basic $209 for 25,000 and Standard $368 for 50,000, plus $12 per extra 1,000 visitors, with a 14-day trial.
  • Best for: Shopify stores with steady traffic, where saving sales matters more than deflecting tickets.
  • Watch out for: the bill follows traffic, so a burst of paid visitors can raise it even if few of them chat. Model it on visitors, not tickets.

Alhena AI: Best for Guided Shopping in Big Catalogs

Alhena, formerly Gleen, sells an AI shopping and support concierge. Its Shopify listing says it guides product discovery, recommends products, answers questions before and after purchase and routes shoppers to your team, and that it is built for fashion, beauty, jewelry and home brands. Alhena also sells a product that tracks how your items show up in AI search.

  • Works with: Shopify, WooCommerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and helpdesks including Zendesk, Gorgias, Intercom and Gladly.
  • Pricing: by AI conversation. Alhena's pricing page lists Free at 25 conversations a month, then Essentials at $199, Growth at $499 and Scale at $999 a month billed annually, for 200, 550 and 1,200 conversations, with $1.20 per extra conversation.
  • Best for: large catalogs where shoppers need help with size, material or style.
  • Watch out for: plans count credits, not resolutions. Alhena says a credit is used whenever its AI resolves or assists a conversation, so assisted chats that end with your team still count. Only spam, irrelevant queries and immediate handoffs are free. Plans below Enterprise cap the knowledge base at 50,000 URLs or SKUs.

Not Sure Which Agent Fits Your Ticket Mix?

Send us a month of ticket types and your stack. We will tell you which off-the-shelf agent fits, what its published pricing works out to at your volume, and whether a custom agent is worth scoping. If an app from this list is the right answer, we will say so.

3. On-Site Search and Discovery: Algolia

Algolia is search infrastructure, not a chat widget. It indexes your catalog and returns results as shoppers type, with AI ranking on its Grow Plus plan. Its Agent Studio lets developers build shopping agents, such as an AI search mode or product page questions, on the same index. The pricing table lists Agent Studio on every plan, but Algolia's LLM provider docs say production agents need your own large language model provider, which bills you per token.

  • Works with: Shopify, Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and commercetools.
  • Pricing: Algolia's pricing page lists Free at 10,000 search requests and 50,000 records a month. After 10,000 requests, Grow charges $0.50 and Grow Plus $1.75 per 1,000 more, plus $0.40 per 1,000 records past 100,000. NeuralSearch, its meaning-based search, needs the top plan and an annual contract.
  • Best for: large or technical catalogs where search drives sales, with a developer to set it up.
  • Watch out for:agents can be tested free on OpenAI's GPT-4.1, but production model costs are yours. Grow Plus search requests cost 3.5 times the Grow rate.

4. Merchant Back Office Agents

These agents work for you and your staff, not your shoppers.

Shopify Sidekick: Best Free Start for Shopify Merchants

Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant inside the admin. Shopify's help center says it can analyze data, manage orders, edit products, create content and generate custom apps, and that it presents changes for your review first. It is part of Shopify Magic, the AI features Shopify says are free regardless of plan.

  • Works with: Shopify stores. Staff can use it within their admin permissions.
  • Pricing: included with your Shopify plan. Features and usage limits vary by plan.
  • Best for: owners and staff who want faster reports, bulk edits and content without adding a tool.
  • Watch out for: it is not a customer service agent. Shopify's setup guide says Sidekick can't talk to your customers or handle support conversations, and isn't available in the admin on a mobile browser.

Commerceflo (FactoryJet's Own Product): For Multi-Channel Operations

Disclosure: Commerceflo is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. We describe it only from our Commerceflo product page and commerceflo.ai. It is an AI commerce operator in early access that runs a DTC store, B2B portals, marketplace listings and retail point of sale on one data model. Eight named agents watch the business and propose a worked fix. Inventory, Pricing, Content, Customer and Growth make changes after you approve them, or under an auto-approve rule you set. Fulfillment, Financial and Compliance only flag issues.

  • Works with: commerceflo.ai lists connections including Amazon, Walmart, eBay, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento and Squarespace, plus NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, Salesforce, Klaviyo, ShipBob, Linnworks and Cin7. Confirm your exact connector first.
  • Pricing: not published. commerceflo.ai describes a one-time implementation plus a monthly subscription, both scoped on a call, with no revenue share.
  • Best for: brands selling on several channels that want one system in place of a stack of apps.
  • Watch out for: it is new, and commerceflo.ai says it has no customer logos or metrics to show yet. Our own page says it is the wrong choice if you sell mainly through one store with simple rules, need proven results first, want the largest app ecosystem, or cannot change core systems this year. Checkout inside ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude is still listed as in development.

What One Month of Tickets Costs Under Each Pricing Model

Every vendor bills a different unit, so here is one hypothetical month run through the published prices above. It is an illustration with stated assumptions, not a quote. The store: a US Shopify brand with 6,000 support conversations a month, 3,000 of them fully resolved by AI.

ToolBilling unitAI fees for 3,000 resolutionsNot included
Fin$0.99 per outcome3,000 × $0.99 = $2,970Procedure handoffs, seats or the monthly minimum
Gorgias AI Agent$0.90 per automated interaction (annual)3,000 × $0.90 = $2,700, if your allowance covers all 3,000Helpdesk plan, and $1.50 each past the allowance
Zendesk AI agentsPer automated resolutionNot publishedAgent seats
Alhena AIPer AI conversationDepends on how many conversations the AI takes$1.20 each past your plan
Rep AIPer store visitorDepends on traffic, not tickets$12 per extra 1,000 visitors

Now a custom agent. Its main running cost is model usage, billed per token, a chunk of text about the size of a short word. Assume each conversation takes three model calls that read 24,000 input tokens in total (instructions, policies, messages and order data) and write 1,500 output tokens. The agent reads all 6,000 conversations, not just the resolved ones. At Anthropic's API prices on September 17, 2026, with no caching discount:

ModelInput / output per 1M tokensPer conversation6,000 conversations a month
Claude Haiku 4.5$1 / $5$0.0315$189
Claude Sonnet 5$2 / $10$0.063$378
Claude Opus 5$5 / $25$0.1575$945

Sonnet 5 in full: 24,000 input tokens at $2 per million is $0.048, plus 1,500 output tokens at $10 per million is $0.015. That makes $0.063 a conversation and $378 a month. Prompt caching can cut the input part, since re-reading cached text costs a tenth of the input price. Anthropic charges 1.1 times its standard token prices for US-only processing.

The gap between Fin's $2,970 and $378 is $2,592 a month, about $31,100 a year. That gap has to pay for the build, hosting, monitoring, the helpdesk your team still uses for handoffs, and the engineer who keeps order, return and ERP connections working. Our guide to what an AI agent costs covers build costs.

At a tenth of the volume, 300 resolutions cost $297 a month on Fin against a $37.80 model bill. A gap of about $3,100 a year rarely pays for a build, so rent. At double the volume in November and December, Fin's line doubles to $5,940 a month, so price your busiest month, not an average one.

Build vs Buy: When a Custom Ecommerce AI Agent Wins

An Off-the-Shelf Agent Is Enough When

  • Your platform is well supported, and most questions are about order status, returns, shipping and product details.
  • Answers live in your store platform and help center, not in an ERP (the system that runs inventory, orders and finance) or a 3PL (an outside warehouse that ships for you).
  • Your return and refund rules fit the vendor's settings.
  • Volume is low or moderate, so per-resolution fees stay below build and upkeep costs.
  • You want it live this month. Gorgias and Fin both say setup can take under an hour.

The Middle Path: Rent the Agent, Build the Actions

Many gaps close without replacing the vendor. Gorgias supports custom actions that call other apps, Fin uses data connectors to update external systems, and Klaviyo has custom tools in open beta. If one missing action is the only problem, a small integration costs less than a new agent. Our AI workflow automation team builds those connections.

A Custom Agent Wins When

  • Answers depend on several systems.“Where is my order?” is easy when Shopify knows. It is harder when the truth sits in a 3PL's warehouse system, a backorder lives in NetSuite, or an OMS (order management system) splits the shipment. A custom agent checks each system and gives one answer. Our guide to AI agents inside NetSuite, SAP and Epicor covers the ERP side of that wiring.
  • B2B pricing decides the reply. Contract prices, net terms, minimum order quantities and account catalogs rarely fit a DTC support tool, and Shopify says B2B-only products aren't supported in its agentic storefronts. A custom agent can build quotes from your ERP data, as our RFQ-to-ERP agent architecture shows.
  • Returns or warranty rules are yours alone. Serial number checks, proof of purchase, condition grading and partial refunds by product line are code, not a setting, and a custom agent enforces them as hard limits.
  • You need to own the data path: which model provider, where logs live, how long you keep them and whether processing stays in the US.
  • Per-resolution fees outgrow the build. When a year of fees costs more than the build plus a year of upkeep, owning is cheaper.

If several apply, look at custom AI agent development or, for support work, AI customer support agents. If you only need a chatbot that answers without acting on your systems, AI chatbot development is the lighter option. To see what a Shopify build involves, Shopify's docs show how to build a storefront AI agent that searches products, answers policy questions and manages carts through MCP (Model Context Protocol, a standard way to give an AI model tools).

How to Choose an Ecommerce AI Agent: A 10-Step Checklist

  1. Count one month of conversations by type: order status, returns, address changes, product questions and B2B requests.
  2. Pick the job first: support, shopping help, search or back office. Most stores need a tool per job, not one agent for everything.
  3. Confirm platform fit in the vendor's docs, not its homepage. Gorgias, for example, sets up AI Agent per Shopify store and connects Magento from its Pro plan.
  4. Turn the billing unit into a monthly number at normal volume and in your busiest month.
  5. Read what counts as billable. Fin bills Procedure handoffs as outcomes, and Gorgias counts each automated interaction as a ticket too.
  6. List the actions you need, such as refunds, cancellations, address changes and return labels, and check each is on the plan you will buy.
  7. Set guardrails before launch: which request types the agent owns, refund and discount limits, and a handoff that passes the full conversation to a person.
  8. Check data handling: whether your data trains models, where it is stored and how it is deleted. Gorgias, for instance, hosts data in the US, the EU and Australia.
  9. Trial it on real conversations. Gorgias offers 7 days, Fin and Rep AI 14 days, and Klaviyo 50 free conversations. Measure resolution rate, escalation rate, customer satisfaction and cost per resolved conversation.
  10. Set your build trigger up front: the monthly fee, or the missing ERP, 3PL or B2B action, that would make a custom agent worth scoping.

Also plan for shoppers who find products inside AI assistants. Shopify's agentic storefronts share eligible products with ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta by default. That is a separate project, covered on our agentic commerce page and in our guide to autonomous commerce agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI agents are best for ecommerce?
It depends on the job. For customer support, Gorgias AI Agent suits Shopify brands, Fin suits brands working across many channels or helpdesks, and Zendesk AI agents suit teams already on Zendesk. For shopping help, Rep AI and Alhena guide shoppers to products. For on-site search, Algolia. For store admin work, Shopify Sidekick is included with Shopify plans. A custom agent wins when answers depend on your ERP, 3PL or B2B pricing.
Which AI agents are best for ecommerce support?
Gorgias AI Agent, Fin and Zendesk AI agents lead for support, and Klaviyo's Customer Agent is worth a look if Klaviyo already runs your email and SMS. Gorgias is built around Shopify and can refund, cancel and edit orders. Fin charges $0.99 per outcome and runs on the Intercom helpdesk or several others. Zendesk suits teams already on Zendesk. Choose by the helpdesk you use today and the actions you need.
Which AI chatbot is best for e-commerce?
If you only need answers to common questions, most tools in this guide can do it. If you need the bot to act, such as refunding an order or changing an address, pick one with actions on your plan, like Gorgias AI Agent on its Basic plan or higher. For pre-sale chat that recommends products, Rep AI and Alhena are built for it. Check that the tool supports your store platform before anything else.
What AI should I use for ecommerce?
Start with the job that eats the most staff time. For most stores that is support, where agents like Gorgias AI Agent or Fin handle order status and returns. If shoppers struggle to find products, improve search with a tool like Algolia before adding chat. If admin work is the bottleneck, try Shopify Sidekick first, since it is included with Shopify. For AI that is not an agent, like product copy tools, see our separate guide.
Does Shopify have an AI agent?
Yes, for merchants. Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant inside the admin. It can analyze data, manage orders, edit products, create content and build custom apps, and it shows changes for your approval first. It does not serve shoppers: Shopify's help center says Sidekick can't talk to your customers or handle support conversations. For a customer-facing agent on Shopify, use an app like Gorgias, Fin or Rep AI, or build one.
Is Sidekick in Shopify free?
Yes. Shopify says Sidekick is included with your Shopify plan, and that features and usage limits vary by plan. Sidekick is part of Shopify Magic, Shopify's set of AI features, which its help center says are free regardless of your plan. Do not confuse it with Sidekick AI, a separate third-party app in the Shopify App Store that charges from $99.99 a month.
Why don't I have access to Sidekick on Shopify?
Check three things. First, permissions: Shopify says each staff member can use Sidekick based on their admin permissions. Second, where you are working: Shopify's setup guide says Sidekick isn't available when you use the Shopify admin in a mobile browser, so try the desktop admin or the Shopify app. Third, your plan, because Shopify says features and usage limits vary by plan. If none of these explains it, contact Shopify support.
Does ChatGPT integrate with Shopify?
Yes, for selling. Shopify's agentic storefronts make products from eligible stores discoverable in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, and they are on by default for eligible stores. To sell in ChatGPT, your store must sell to US customers, and shoppers finish buying on your own store checkout, opened from ChatGPT. Shopify says there is no fee beyond your standard payment processing fees.
What is the Gorgias AI agent?
It is the AI part of Gorgias, a helpdesk built for ecommerce. Gorgias's docs say the same AI Agent works as a support agent for returns, tracking and cancellations, and as a shopping assistant before purchase, on email, chat, SMS and social channels. It can take actions like canceling an order or processing a return, and you get a dedicated AI Agent for each Shopify store you connect.
How much does Gorgias cost per month?
Gorgias's helpdesk costs $10 a month on Starter with 50 tickets. Basic, Pro and Advanced cost $50, $300 and $750 a month billed annually, with 300, 2,000 and 5,000 tickets, and more if billed monthly. AI Agent is extra: $0.90 per automated interaction on annual plans or $1.00 on monthly plans, and $1.50 each past your plan's allowance. We checked these prices on September 17, 2026.
Is Gorgias similar to Zendesk?
Both are helpdesks with AI agents, but they are built for different buyers. Gorgias is made for ecommerce, prices its helpdesk by ticket volume rather than per agent, and ties its AI Agent to Shopify store data. Zendesk is a general customer service platform used across many industries and priced per agent seat: $19 a month for Support Team or $55 for Suite Team, billed annually.
Who are Gorgias's competitors?
Gorgias itself publishes comparison pages against Zendesk, Kustomer, Gladly, Intercom, Richpanel, Re:amaze, Zowie, Ada, Siena and Yuma. For ecommerce AI agents, the closest alternatives are Fin, which can even run on top of Gorgias, and Zendesk AI agents. Rep AI and Alhena overlap on pre-sale shopping chat, but both also integrate with Gorgias, so they can run alongside it rather than replace it.
How does Intercom Fin work?
You train Fin on your help content, policies and data connectors, then write Procedures for multi-step jobs. Fin answers on channels such as email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, takes actions in connected systems and transfers to your team when needed. You pay $0.99 per outcome, counted once per conversation, and nothing when a conversation passes to your team without an outcome.
Is Intercom now called Fin?
The company is. On May 12, 2026, Intercom changed its company name to Fin, after its AI agent. Intercom is still the name of its customer service software, the helpdesk, and the company says that product will live on. So Fin is now both the company and its AI agent, and Intercom is the helpdesk that Fin can run on.
How much does Intercom cost per month?
The Intercom helpdesk costs $29, $85 or $132 per seat a month billed annually for its Essential, Advanced and Expert plans. Fin, the AI agent, costs $0.99 per outcome on top, and channels like SMS and WhatsApp are billed by usage. If you run Fin on another helpdesk instead, there are no seat fees, but a minimum monthly commitment applies, such as 50 outcomes.
Does Zendesk have an AI agent?
Yes. Zendesk AI agents answer customers on messaging, email and voice, and can act in other systems through authorized actions and API integrations you set up. They are included in Zendesk Suite and Support plans, with usage billed per automated resolution. Zendesk is also retiring older features: AI agents Essential and its legacy bot builder will no longer be available as of December 10, 2026.
How much does a Zendesk AI agent cost?
Zendesk bills AI agents per automated resolution. Each plan includes a monthly dollar allowance for resolutions, from $2 per agent seat on Suite Team up to $10 on Suite Enterprise, and you can buy more or allow overage. Zendesk's help center does not list per-resolution rates, so ask sales for them. Seats cost $19 per agent a month for Support Team or $55 for Suite Team, billed annually.
What is Rep AI?
Rep AI is an AI shopping assistant and support chatbot for online stores, with an app in the Shopify App Store. Its listing says it spots shoppers who hesitate, opens a chat to recommend products and guide them to checkout, and handles order status, returns and cancellations before handing off to live chat. It prices by store visitors, with paid Shopify plans starting at $104 a month.
What are AI shopping assistants?
They are chat agents on a store that help shoppers before they buy. A good one answers product questions from your catalog, compares options and recommends items, and some can add products to the cart. Some, like Rep AI, start the chat when a shopper seems stuck. Others, like Alhena, focus on guided product discovery. Unlike a search box, they ask follow-up questions to narrow the choice.
Is there a free AI shopping assistant for my store?
There are free tiers, with tight limits. Alhena's free plan covers 25 AI conversations a month. Rep AI's free Pay-as-you-Grow plan covers 100 store visitors a month. Klaviyo gives 50 free Customer Agent conversations as a one-time trial. Shopify Sidekick is included with Shopify plans, but it helps merchants, not shoppers. Free tiers are useful for testing, but most stores outgrow them quickly.
Is Algolia free to use?
Yes, up to a limit. Algolia's Free plan includes 10,000 search requests a month and 50,000 records, which suits a small store or a test. The paid Grow and Grow Plus plans also include 10,000 search requests and 100,000 records before usage charges, and they bill monthly with no contract. Algolia's full AI search, including NeuralSearch, sits on its top plan, which needs an annual contract.
How expensive is Algolia?
It depends on search volume. After the first 10,000 search requests each month, Algolia's Grow plan charges $0.50 per 1,000 extra requests and Grow Plus charges $1.75, plus $0.40 per 1,000 records beyond 100,000. A store with 100,000 searches a month would pay $45 for search requests on Grow or $157.50 on Grow Plus, before records and add-ons. The top plan has custom pricing.
Which AI is best for product recommendations?
For recommendations on product and cart pages, search platforms like Algolia offer a recommendations API, with 10,000 recommendation requests a month included on its Grow plans. For recommendations inside a conversation, shopping assistants like Rep AI and Alhena suggest products from your catalog, and Klaviyo's Customer Agent recommends products using the shopper's profile and history. Pick based on where shoppers decide: browsing pages or asking questions.
How do you get AI to recommend your product?
Make your products easy for AI to read and buy. On Shopify, agentic storefronts share eligible products with ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, and they are on by default for eligible stores. Beyond that, keep product titles, attributes, prices, stock and policies accurate and consistent everywhere, because AI answers draw on that data. Our agentic commerce page covers the readiness work.
How much does an AI agent for customer service cost?
Off-the-shelf support agents charge per result. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, and Gorgias charges $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction plus its helpdesk plan. Zendesk bills per automated resolution but does not publish its rates. A custom agent's running cost is mostly model usage, about 6 cents a conversation on Claude Sonnet 5 in our hypothetical example, before the cost of building and maintaining it.
Can I build my own AI agent?
Yes. Model providers sell API access by the token, and Shopify's developer docs include a tutorial for a storefront AI agent that searches products, answers policy questions and manages carts. The hard part is not the prototype. It is connecting safely to your order, return and ERP systems, setting refund limits, logging every action and keeping it working as those systems change. That is most of the cost.
Is it better to build or buy an AI agent for an online store?
Buy when your store runs on a platform the vendor supports well, your questions are standard, and your volume is low or moderate. Build when answers depend on your ERP, OMS or 3PL, when B2B pricing or custom warranty rules decide the reply, when you must control where customer data goes, or when a year of per-resolution fees would cost more than building and maintaining your own agent.
Can I use ChatGPT for customer service?
Not on its own. A ChatGPT subscription can help your team draft replies faster, but it does not sit in your helpdesk answering shoppers, looking up their orders or following your refund rules. To automate customer service, you need an agent connected to those systems with your permissions: an off-the-shelf tool like Gorgias AI Agent or Fin, or a custom agent built on a model API.
Can AI handle customer service for an online store?
Much of it, yes. Repeat requests like order status, starting a return, address changes before shipping and product questions are what ecommerce support agents are built for, and tools like Gorgias AI Agent and Fin can act on them, not just reply. Keep people on upset customers, exceptions to policy, expensive damaged orders and anything the agent is unsure about, and make sure every handoff carries the full conversation.
How do I create an AI agent for customer service?
Export a month of tickets and group them by type. Pick the two or three types with the most volume, write down the exact policy for each, and list the actions they need, like order lookups or refunds. Then either set up an off-the-shelf agent with those skills and test it on past tickets, or build one on a model API with a tool for each action, hard limits and logging.
Can ChatGPT shop for you?
It can find and compare products, and for Shopify stores it can take you to checkout. Shopify says ChatGPT shoppers complete their purchase on the store's own checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab on ChatGPT web. Shopify also says Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can offer direct checkout without leaving the AI channel, where the store has turned it on.
Is Intercom Fin good for ecommerce?
It is a strong option if you support shoppers on many channels or already use a helpdesk Fin connects to. Its Shopify app resolves order questions using real-time store data, and the price is simple at $0.99 per outcome. Keep three things in mind: outcomes include Procedure handoffs, Fin is not ecommerce-only the way Gorgias is, and fees rise directly with volume, so price your busiest month.
