§ The Short Answer

What a Shopify AI Agent Does, and When You Need a Custom One

§01

A Shopify AI agent is software that does a store job in several steps through Shopify's official APIs: it reads an order or an email, decides what should happen under your rules, and prepares the action as a draft, a tag or a reply. It is built on a large language model (LLM), the kind of AI behind ChatGPT and Claude, wrapped in code that limits what it may do.

§02

Try Shopify's own tools first. Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant in your admin, and it presents changes for your review before applying them. Shopify Flow is a free automation app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Sidekick ↗ Flow ↗

§03

A custom agent earns its place when one of these is true:

  • The job starts outside Shopify, like a purchase order arriving by email as a PDF
  • It spans systems, such as Shopify plus NetSuite, a 3PL or your helpdesk
  • Your rules are yours alone: customer price lists, credit terms, return exceptions
  • You need proof: a test score before launch and a log of every action after
§04

Shopify made its REST Admin API legacy on October 1, 2024, and new public apps must use the GraphQL Admin API from April 1, 2025. Any agent built today should be on GraphQL, or it starts life as technical debt. shopify.dev ↗

§05

FactoryJet is a registered Shopify Partner that builds both Shopify stores and AI agents. Bhavesh Barot, our founder, is involved in every AI project, the same team supports the agent after launch, and you own everything we build. If Sidekick, Flow or an app will do the job, we say so on the first call.

What We Build

7 Shopify AI Agents We Build for Store Operations

Each one does one job, starts from a clear trigger, and has a hard limit on what it may change. Pick the one that costs your team the most hours today and start there.

AGT-01

Order Exception Agent

Shopify Admin APIWebhooksShopify Flow
Starts whenA new order is created in ShopifyHard limitTags and notes only. It never cancels or edits an order.

Checks every order against your rules and history: address problems, mismatched billing and shipping, unusual quantities, a SKU that is out of stock at the warehouse. Tags the order, writes a one-line reason and routes it to the right person.

AGT-02

Wholesale PO-to-Draft-Order Agent

Shopify B2BDraft ordersGmail or Outlook
Starts whenA buyer emails a purchase order as a PDF or spreadsheetHard limitCreates drafts. A person completes the order.

Reads the PO, matches the buyer to their company record, matches each line to your SKUs and their price list, and creates a Shopify draft order. Lines it cannot match, like a retired part number, go to your sales team with the reason.

AGT-03

Returns and Exchanges Agent

Shopify returnsLoop or AfterShipHelpdesk
Starts whenA customer asks to return or exchange an itemHard limitRefunds always need a person above the limit you set.

Reads the request, finds the order, checks it against your return window and item rules, and prepares the return or exchange with the right reason code. Clear cases are ready in one click; edge cases go to a person with the policy line quoted.

AGT-04

Inventory and Reorder Agent

Shopify inventoryNetSuite or OdooGoogle Sheets
Starts whenStock drops below a level, or every morningHard limitDrafts reorder lists. A buyer sends every PO.

Compares Shopify stock by location with sales speed and open purchase orders in your ERP or spreadsheet, then drafts a reorder list for your buyer, grouped by supplier. When a supplier confirms, it checks the ship date and price against the PO.

AGT-05

Shopify-to-ERP Reconciliation Agent

NetSuiteOdooSAP Business OneCeligo
Starts whenEvery few hours, and on every sync errorHard limitRead-only on the ERP until you approve a fix.

Compares recent Shopify orders, refunds and stock with what landed in NetSuite, Odoo or SAP Business One. When a record is missing or different, it explains the gap in plain words and drafts the fix for your ops team to approve.

AGT-06

Catalog and Product Data Agent

Products APIMetafieldsBulk operations
Starts whenA supplier sheet arrives, or a product is missing dataHard limitProducts stay unpublished until a person approves.

Drafts product titles, descriptions, tags and metafields from supplier data in your brand voice, checks them against your rules (required fields, banned claims, size charts) and saves them to Shopify as drafts for review.

AGT-07

Order Status and Support Agent

ZendeskGorgiasShopify orders
Starts whenA where-is-my-order or order-change email arrivesHard limitSensitive cases go to a person with the order attached.

Finds the order in Shopify, reads the tracking status, and drafts a reply inside your helpdesk with the facts filled in. Address changes and cancellations are checked against fulfillment status first. Support has its own page.

How We Build It

20 Things We Build Into Every Shopify AI Agent

Four groups, 20 specific items. If an agency cannot hand you a list this specific, you are buying a demo, not something your store can depend on during a sale.

GRP-01

Shopify connection

Built the way Shopify tells app developers to build.

5 items
  • A custom app on your store with its own token, installed and owned by you
  • Only the API scopes the job needs, such as read orders and write draft orders, nothing more
  • GraphQL Admin API, because Shopify made REST legacy in October 2024
  • Paced to your plan's API limit, so the agent never slows your other apps
  • Pinned API version, upgraded on purpose, not by surprise
GRP-02

Events and reliability

Shopify says webhooks can repeat, arrive out of order or go missing. We plan for all three.

5 items
  • Duplicate check on X-Shopify-Webhook-Id, so one order never gets two replies
  • No reliance on event order: the agent re-reads the order before acting
  • Scheduled reconciliation job that catches any event that never arrived
  • Error alerts to a person, never silent failure
  • Idempotent writes so a retry cannot create a second draft order
GRP-03

Approvals and limits

The agent prepares. Your team decides anything with money attached.

5 items
  • Drafts, tags and notes by default; final changes only where you approve them
  • Refunds, discounts and price changes behind a code rule and a person above your limit
  • Daily spend cap on the AI model so a loop cannot run up a bill
  • An off switch your team can flip without calling us
  • Full action log: every input, decision and change, kept in your account
GRP-04

Accuracy and testing

If nobody measured it before launch, nobody knows if it works.

5 items
  • Test set from your real orders and emails, with the answer your best person would give
  • Pass mark agreed before the build, not after
  • Edge cases on purpose: split shipments, partial refunds, B2B terms, bundles
  • Prompt-injection tests using instructions hidden in customer emails
  • Monthly re-scoring against the same set after launch

Draft Order

A draft order is an order your staff prepare on a customer's behalf, for sales that come in by phone, email or in person. It only becomes a real order on your Orders page once it is paid or completed. Shopify Help

Why it matters for AI: a draft order is the safest place for an agent to write. The agent does the typing and matching, the draft waits, and a person on your team makes it real. We use the same pattern everywhere: tags on orders, unpublished products, reorder lists a buyer sends.

Cost

What a Shopify AI Agent Costs, and What Drives the Price

You pay for two things: the build, which we quote as a fixed price per phase after a scoping call, and running costs after launch. These five factors decide where your agent lands. For published market price ranges, see our AI agent cost guide.

01

How many systems

Lower costShopify only

Every extra system (an ERP, a 3PL, a helpdesk) adds its own API, permissions, test cases and failure modes. An agent that lives in Shopify alone is the simplest build.

02

Read or write

Lower costReads and drafts

An agent that tags orders or drafts replies is cheaper to make safe than one that writes draft orders, and far cheaper than one allowed to change prices or refunds.

03

How messy the input is

Lower costClean Shopify data

Structured order data is easy. Scanned PDFs, free-text emails and supplier sheets with old part numbers need more testing before the agent is right often enough.

04

Volume and peaks

Watch forSales events, big imports

Order volume drives AI model usage, which you pay the model provider directly, and big jobs must be paced around your plan's API limit.

05

Support after launch

MonthlyMonitoring and fixes

Shopify versions its API, apps change their data and your policies move. A monthly plan covers re-scoring, fixes and improvements, scoped in advance so the cost is known.

How We Build a Shopify AI Agent, Week by Week

01

Scope

We sit with the people who do the job, agree one number to beat, and check whether Sidekick, Flow or an app already covers it.

02

Test set

We collect real orders, emails and edge cases from your store, with the answer your best person would give, and agree a pass mark.

03

Prototype

A working agent on a development store or read-only access, scored on the test set, with running cost per task. Usually 3 to 5 weeks in.

04

Build & pilot

Custom app, webhooks, approvals and logs, then a pilot on live orders with drafts only. One job on one or two systems: 5 to 8 weeks. Several systems: 8 to 14.

05

Launch & support

Rollout with your team, then monthly re-scoring and fixes from the people who built it.

Honest Advice

When You Should Not Build a Custom Shopify Agent

A custom agent is the right answer less often than AI vendors admit.

01

A fixed rule would do

Do this insteadSet up Shopify Flow

If you can write the job as "when this, then that", Flow does it for free on most plans. No AI needed.

02

It is only support

Do this insteadTurn on your helpdesk's AI agent

Gorgias, Zendesk and Intercom all sell AI agents for routine tickets. Set one up well first and build only for the gap.

03

Low volume

Do this insteadKeep a person on it, use Sidekick

If the job takes an hour a week, the build and support will cost more than the time it saves.

04

The store itself is the problem

Do this insteadFix the store first

An agent cannot fix messy product data, broken apps or a slow theme. Clean the store up, then automate.

FAQ

Shopify AI Agent Questions, Answered Directly

24 questions store owners ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google about AI agents for Shopify, answered without hedging.

Shopify AI agent basics
Q01What is a Shopify AI agent?

A Shopify AI agent is software that uses a large language model to do a store job in several steps, through Shopify's official APIs. It reads orders, customers, products and inventory, decides what should happen under rules you set, and then drafts or takes an action, such as creating a draft order or tagging an order for review. The difference from a chatbot is that an agent acts, not just answers.

Q02Which AI agents are best for a Shopify store?

Start with what Shopify already ships. Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant in your admin, and Shopify Flow automates rule-based tasks for free on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. For support tickets, helpdesk products like Gorgias, Zendesk and Intercom have their own AI agents. A custom agent is best when the job spans Shopify and another system, such as your ERP, inbox or 3PL, and no app covers it. Best AI agents for ecommerce ↗

Q03Can Shopify Sidekick do what a custom AI agent does?

For work inside your admin, often yes. Shopify describes Sidekick as an AI assistant that can analyze data, manage orders and edit products, and it presents changes for your review before applying them. It is a tool for the person sitting in the admin. A custom agent runs on its own when an event happens, such as a purchase order arriving by email, and it can reach systems outside Shopify. Shopify Help: Sidekick ↗

Q04What is the difference between Shopify Flow and an AI agent?

Flow follows rules you write: when an order comes in with this tag, do that. It is free, reliable and should be your first stop. An AI agent handles the messy part rules cannot: reading a customer email, working out which order it is about, and deciding which of five next steps fits. Many of our builds use both, with Flow for the fixed rules and the agent for the judgment calls. Shopify Help: Flow ↗

Q05What jobs should a Shopify store give to an AI agent first?

Pick a job your team repeats every day, where the data already lives in Shopify or your inbox, and where a person can check the result in seconds. For most stores that is order exception triage, where-is-my-order replies, wholesale orders that arrive by email or PDF, or return requests. Avoid starting with anything that moves money on its own.

How the build works
Q06How does an AI agent connect to Shopify?

Through a custom app installed on your store, which gets its own access token with only the permissions the job needs. The agent reads and writes through the GraphQL Admin API and listens for events through webhooks. Shopify calls the REST Admin API legacy as of October 1, 2024, and new public apps must use GraphQL from April 1, 2025, so we build new agents on GraphQL. shopify.dev: REST Admin API ↗

Q07Does the Shopify plan I am on change what an AI agent can do?

It changes how fast the agent can work. Shopify's GraphQL Admin API refills at 100 points a second on Standard plans, 200 on Advanced, 1,000 on Plus and 2,000 on Shopify for enterprise, and one query can never cost more than 1,000 points. A store with a few hundred orders a day rarely hits this. A bulk catalog rewrite or a large wholesale import has to be paced around it. shopify.dev: rate limits ↗

Q08Can an AI agent create orders in Shopify?

Yes, and the safe way is a draft order. Shopify lets staff create draft orders for phone, email or in-person sales, and a draft only becomes a real order once it is paid or completed. So our agents turn an emailed purchase order into a draft order with the right customer, items and prices, and a person on your team checks it and completes it. Shopify Help: draft orders ↗

Q09What happens if Shopify sends the same event twice or misses one?

It will happen, so we design for it. Shopify says webhooks can arrive more than once, out of order, or not at all. Our agents store each X-Shopify-Webhook-Id and skip repeats, never assume events arrive in order, and run a scheduled reconciliation job that re-reads recent orders from the API. That is how you avoid a duplicate refund or a missed exception. shopify.dev: webhooks ↗

Q10Can a Shopify AI agent work with NetSuite or another ERP?

Yes. This is one of the most useful jobs. The agent reads the order in Shopify, checks stock, price or credit terms in NetSuite, Odoo or SAP Business One through their official APIs, and drafts the next step in whichever system owns it. If you already sync Shopify and your ERP with a connector like Celigo, the agent works alongside it and does not replace the sync. AI agents inside your ERP ↗

Q11Can an AI agent handle Shopify B2B and wholesale orders?

Yes, on plans that include Shopify B2B. Wholesale buyers often still email a PDF purchase order instead of using the portal. The agent reads the PDF, matches the buyer to their company record, matches each line to your SKUs and the buyer's price list, and drafts the order. Anything it cannot match, such as an old part number, goes to a person with the reason attached. Shopify Plus B2B ↗

Q12Which AI model do you use for Shopify agents?

We test models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google on your own orders and emails, then pick on accuracy, cost per task and data terms. Different steps can use different models: a small cheap model to sort emails and a stronger one to read a messy purchase order. The model sits behind one setting, so it can be swapped later without rebuilding the agent.

Cost, timelines & support
Q13How much does it cost to build an AI agent for Shopify?

It depends on four things: how many systems the agent touches, whether it only reads or also writes, how messy the input is, and how many approval steps you need. A single-job agent that reads Shopify and drafts replies sits at the low end. One that reads PDFs, checks an ERP and writes draft orders costs more. We quote a fixed price per phase after a short scoping call. Our cost guide shows published market ranges. AI agent cost guide ↗

Q14What does a Shopify AI agent cost to run each month?

There are three running costs. The AI model provider bills per use, based on how much text the agent reads and writes, and you pay them directly. Hosting for the agent is usually small. Then there is support: monitoring accuracy, fixing things when Shopify or an app changes, and improving the agent. We scope support as a monthly plan so the cost is known in advance. AI agent monitoring and support ↗

Q15How long does it take to build a Shopify AI agent?

A working prototype on your real orders is usually ready 3 to 5 weeks in. One job on one or two systems, such as Shopify plus your helpdesk, takes 5 to 8 weeks to reach live use. A job across several systems, such as Shopify, an ERP and a 3PL, takes 8 to 14 weeks. The time goes into testing on real cases and edge cases, not into writing prompts.

Q16Who supports the AI agent after launch?

The same team that built it. Agents drift: Shopify changes an API version, an app updates its data, or your policies change. We re-score the agent against its test set every month, fix what breaks, and keep a log of every action it took. Most agencies hand over a demo and disappear. Support after launch is the part we are accountable for. Monitoring and support ↗

Data, safety & ownership
Q17Is it safe to let an AI agent change things in my Shopify store?

It is safe when the agent's power is limited by design. OWASP lists excessive agency as a top risk for AI systems: too many functions, too many permissions, too little human oversight. So our agents get only the API scopes their job needs, write drafts or tags instead of final changes, run every action through code checks, and hand anything with money or refunds to a person. OWASP LLM06:2025 ↗

Q18Will my customer data be used to train AI models?

No. We build on the business API terms of model providers, which do not use your inputs for training by default, and never on personal chat accounts. The agent only sends the fields a task needs, so a model reading a return request sees the order and the message, not your whole customer list. We document where every piece of data goes so you can check it.

Q19Do we own the Shopify AI agent you build?

Yes. The code, prompts, test sets and documentation are yours, in your own code repository and cloud account, and the custom app is installed on your store under your control. You hold the accounts with the AI model provider and pay them directly with no markup through us. If you move the work to another team, the agent keeps running.

Q20What stops an AI agent from giving a customer a wrong refund or discount?

Refunds, discounts and price changes never run on the model's word alone. The agent can suggest one, with its reason and the order attached, but the action itself sits behind a rule in code and, above a limit you set, behind a person's approval. Every suggestion and every approval is logged, so you can see exactly what happened on any order.

Build, buy or hire
Q21Should I build a custom Shopify AI agent or buy an app?

Buy when a proven app covers the job inside Shopify or your helpdesk. It will be live in days. Build when the job crosses systems, when your rules are specific to your business, or when you need to own the test results and logs. Our honest rule: if Sidekick, Flow or a helpdesk AI agent can do it, we will tell you on the first call. Build vs buy guide ↗

Q22Which agency can build an AI agent for a Shopify store?

Look for a team that knows Shopify's APIs and your other systems, not only AI models. FactoryJet is a registered Shopify Partner that builds Shopify stores and AI agents, and our founder is involved in every AI project. Ask any agency to show an agent they have put live, explain how it handles duplicate webhooks, and tell you who supports it after launch.

Q23Do I need Shopify Plus to use a custom AI agent?

No. A custom app with an AI agent works on standard Shopify plans. Plus gives the agent more API capacity, 1,000 points a second instead of 100, which matters for large imports or high order volume. Some features the agent might use, such as Shopify B2B, depend on your plan, so we check your plan against the job during scoping. shopify.dev: rate limits ↗

Q24Can the AI agent handle customer support tickets too?

Yes, and support has its own page because the design is different: the agent answers from your policies inside Zendesk or Gorgias, looks up the order in Shopify, and hands sensitive cases to a person. If support is your main job, start there. This page covers the store operations work behind it, such as orders, wholesale, returns and inventory. AI customer support agents ↗
