"SEO consulting splits into firms and independent experts, and picking the wrong kind wastes months. We compared five US consulting firms and four independent consultants on what each is actually for. Every claim quoted from their own site. Disclosure: we are on the list, at number ten."
Key Takeaways
- 1SEO consulting is two different products. Firms give you a team that can also execute. Independent consultants give you one senior brain that usually will not execute. Choosing the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake here.
- 2Our researched 2026 shortlist, firms: iPullRank, Seer Interactive, Ignite Visibility, First Page Sage, Searchbloom. Independents: Aleyda Solis, Eli Schwartz, Kevin Indig, Marie Haynes. Plus FactoryJet, disclosed, at number ten.
- 3Four of our twelve AI test answers named individual consultants rather than companies, which is unusual and tells you the independents genuinely dominate the strategy end of this market.
- 4iPullRank publishes the largest verifiable claim on the list: "$2.4 BILLION in incremental revenue" for clients, with Target, Under Armour, American Express and Adidas named.
- 5Contract terms are unusually good in this category: First Page Sage states it does not lock clients into long-term contracts and Searchbloom states "No Lengthy Contracts".
- 6Honest position: nine names above us have deeper consulting track records. We rank them accordingly and explain the narrow case where we are the right call.
- 7This page is a shortlist. If you have already decided to hire, scope and terms live on our SEO consulting service page instead.
The short answer: if you need a firm, iPullRank has the deepest technical and AI search practice, Seer Interactive the strongest enterprise data work, and First Page Sage the best B2B lead generation record. If you need one senior brain rather than a team, the independents are Aleyda Solis, Eli Schwartz, Kevin Indig and Marie Haynes. FactoryJet is tenth and we explain why below.
First, decide which of the two things you are buying
This is the part that saves you the most money, and almost no roundup says it.
"SEO consulting" covers two products that barely resemble each other. A consulting firm gives you a team that diagnoses the problem and can then also fix it. An independent consultant gives you direct access to one senior person who will tell you exactly what is wrong and, in most cases, will not lift a finger to fix it. Both are legitimate. Buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this category.
The test is simple. Ask yourself whether you are short of capability or capacity. If you have people who could do the work but nobody sure what work to do, you want a consultant. If you know roughly what needs doing and have nobody to do it, you want a firm. If you genuinely have neither, the sequence that works is an independent audit first to set direction, then execution against it.
One signal worth noting from our testing: four of our twelve AI engine answers named individual people rather than companies. That almost never happens in other service categories, and it tells you the independents genuinely dominate the strategy end of this market.
Which page do you actually need? This one is a shortlist. If you have already decided to hire and want scope and terms, go to our SEO consulting service page instead.
Disclosure, up front: FactoryJet is on this list, at number ten. Everything said about the other nine was fetched from their own websites on 7 September 2026 and is quoted or attributed. Nobody paid to appear.

The consulting firms
1. iPullRank, deepest technical and AI search practice
Founded by Mike King and the most technically ambitious operation on this page. It publishes a Relevance Engineering Framework built around how AI search actually retrieves: "query fan-out, passage retrieval, embeddings, and synthesis". That is a materially more specific account of AI search than most agencies manage, and it is published rather than kept behind a sales call.
It states "$2.4 BILLION in incremental revenue" generated for clients, including "$290M in revenue" for a global ecommerce marketplace, and names Target, Under Armour, American Express, Adidas and CVS Pharmacy among clients. Named to the 2026 Inc. 5000. Its positioning line is the clearest statement of where search is going that we found: "We don't optimize for blue links. We make your brand the answer."
Consider it if your problem is genuinely technical or you are serious about AI search. Look elsewhere if you are a small business, because this is enterprise-shaped work.
2. Seer Interactive, best enterprise and data-led consulting
States "20+ years" in digital marketing with "130+ Enterprise Clients" and a "92% Retention Rate", which is the most persuasive single number on this page: enterprise clients do not renew out of politeness. It runs an AI consulting practice branded SeerAdvance and names Generative Engine Optimization as a distinct service, with research "cited by Forbes, eMarketer, Fast Company, Semrush, Search Engine Land, Ahrefs".
It is also a certified B Corporation, publishing "$802,595 donated in 2024" and "5000+ volunteer hours". Its read on AI search is worth quoting: "Performance isn't driven by ranking anymore, it's driven by whether your brand is included in the answer."
Consider it if you are enterprise and want analytics rigour. Look elsewhere if you want a small, cheap, fast engagement.
4. First Page Sage, best for B2B lead generation
States "over 17 years of experience turning websites into full-funnel, organic lead generation systems", positioned explicitly as an "SEO + GEO agency" producing content "like it was written by your own experts". Clients named include Salesforce, Logitech, Verizon, US Bank and Dignity Health.
Notably it states "we don't believe in locking our clients into long-term contracts", which at that client calibre is unusual and worth weighing.
Consider it if you are B2B and judge SEO on pipeline rather than traffic. Look elsewhere if you are ecommerce or local.
6. Ignite Visibility, best full-service scale
Founded in 2012, stating "over 13 years" and "over 340 Igniters", with Google Premier Partner status described as "TOP 99% of digital agencies" and "Highly Reviewed by 250+ Clients". Awards listed include W3 Awards 2025 Gold and a Clutch "#1 Digital Marketing Agency in USA" placement. Clients named include Experian, Dun & Bradstreet, Driven Brands and Inspire Brands.
Consider it if you want consulting and a large delivery team under one roof. Look elsewhere if you want a named senior specialist personally on your account.
9. Searchbloom, best documented method with published rates
Based in South Jordan, Utah, and the only firm here that publishes what it charges: SEO from $3,000 a month, PPC management from $2,000. It works to a named ART framework (Authority, Relevance, Technology), states "No Lengthy Contracts" and retention "over 95 percent", and holds a Search Engine Land Award win from 2021 with finalist places in 2024 and 2025.
Consider it if you want the price before the call. Look elsewhere if your budget sits below its stated floor.
The independent consultants
These four sell judgement, not delivery. Read their published work before contacting any of them, because in this category the work is public and the thinking is the product.
3. Aleyda Solis, best for international and AI search
Operating through Orainti, a "boutique SEO consultancy" serving "multinationals to startups across the world", and describing herself as an "Award Winning International SEO & AI Search Optimization Consultant, Speaker & Author". Specialisms are international, ecommerce, marketplaces and SaaS.
The public output is the strongest on this page: SEOFOMO, a weekly newsletter to "+35,000 subscribers", plus LearningSEO.io, LearningAIsearch.com and the Crawling Mondays series. Recognitions include European Search Personality of the Year in 2018. Clients named include Turo, FreshBooks and Trade Republic.
Consider her if you operate across markets or languages, or need serious AI search thinking. Look elsewhere if you need someone to execute.
5. Eli Schwartz, best for product-led and B2B SaaS strategy
Author of Product-Led SEO, which is the reference text for treating organic search as a product surface rather than a content channel. Previously led SEO at SurveyMonkey, where he built organic search "from nearly zero to one of the largest growth drivers at the company", and oversaw international SEO through the IPO. Companies worked with include Shutterstock, Gusto, WordPress, Quora, Mixpanel and Zendesk.
Consider him if you are a SaaS or marketplace business and suspect your SEO problem is really a product decision. Look elsewhere if you need local or technical remediation.
7. Kevin Indig, best for organic growth strategy
Describes himself as "an organic growth advisor and the author of Growth Memo", publishing "weekly research-backed insights on SEO, AI search, and organic growth". Held growth and SEO leadership roles at Shopify, G2 and Atlassian. Clients shown include Airbnb, Reddit, Snapchat, Ramp, Dropbox and Toast.
A published client comment from Ramp's Head of Growth: he "was instrumental in kicking off Ramp's SEO efforts by defining a strategy that brought SEO to a multi-million Dollar pipeline channel".
Consider him if you are venture-backed and need organic growth strategy that survives a board meeting. Look elsewhere if you are a small local business.
8. Marie Haynes, best for algorithm updates and AI systems
Dr Marie Haynes states "16 years of experience helping businesses of all sizes improve their site quality", specialising in Google's algorithms and "especially those that use AI": the Helpful Content System, SpamBrain, E-E-A-T, Navboost, AI Overviews and AI Mode. She offers an AI Strategy Report and a Traffic Drop Assessment, publishes the "AI News You Can Use" newsletter and the Search News You Can Use podcast, and wrote "SEO in the Gemini Era: The Story of How AI Changed Google Search".
Consider her if your traffic fell after an update and nobody can tell you why. Look elsewhere if you need growth strategy rather than diagnosis.
10. FactoryJet, for small businesses needing advice and hands (disclosure: this is us)
We are tenth, and the reason is the same one we gave on our other roundups: the nine above have deeper published consulting track records than we do. iPullRank publishes billions in attributed revenue. Aleyda Solis reaches 35,000 people a week. We do not.
The narrow case where we are the right call is real, though, and it follows directly from the firm-versus-independent split at the top of this page. Most independents will not execute. Most enterprise firms are not built for a small budget. A small business that needs both the diagnosis and someone to actually do the work afterwards falls between the two, and that gap is where we work, month-to-month, with AI search visibility handled alongside classic SEO rather than sold separately. Scope is on the SEO consulting service page.
Consider us if you need the roadmap and the hands and you are not enterprise. Look elsewhere if you want a senior independent strategist. That is Aleyda Solis, Eli Schwartz or Kevin Indig, and we have ranked them above us for that reason.
How to run your shortlist this week
- Answer the capability-or-capacity question first. It halves the list immediately.
- Read three published pieces by anyone you are considering. In this category the thinking is public, which makes it the easiest market to assess before spending anything.
- Ask to see a redacted deliverable. A real audit looks nothing like a sales deck, and a firm that cannot show you one has a reason.
- Ask who implements. The single most common mismatch here.
- Agree the ninety-day test before you start, not after.
Methodology
Run on 7 September 2026 and repeatable. We asked ChatGPT (gpt-5.6), Claude (Sonnet 5), Gemini (3.8 Flash) and Perplexity (Sonar Pro), each with live web search enabled, to recommend US SEO consulting companies across three phrasings, including one specifically asking for strategy and audits rather than execution. Twelve answers. WebFX, Searchbloom and First Page Sage scored 6 of 12; Ignite Visibility 5; SmartSites, Victorious and Eli Schwartz 4; Seer Interactive, iPullRank, Marie Haynes, Kevin Indig and Aleyda Solis 3.
We then pulled the live US Google results for the head terms, and fetched each shortlisted subject's own website, recording only claims stated there. Where a site does not state a founding year or team size, we left it out rather than estimate it. Nobody paid to appear and no review scores were invented.
One editorial decision worth stating: WebFX, SmartSites and Victorious all scored well here but appear on our local SEO roundup instead, because their strongest published work is delivery rather than consulting. Listing the same agencies on every page would make both lists less useful.
