"A fact-checked guide to headless commerce agencies that build Next.js storefronts for US brands, grouped by the platform they lead with. Frameworks, commerce backends, CMS and Vercel partner tiers for each, read on the agency’s own site or Vercel listing on 23 October 2026. FactoryJet is on the list and says so."

Key Takeaways

  • 1Match a headless commerce agency to the platform you will keep behind the storefront: Shopify, BigCommerce or something else. The framework follows from that.
  • 2Every fact about every agency was read on its own site or its Vercel partner listing on 23 October 2026. Nobody paid to be listed, and the order is not a ranking.
  • 3Only one agency publishes a headless build price: MAK Digital Design, at $50,000 to $150,000 for a mid-market storefront on an existing backend.
  • 4BigCommerce Catalyst is built on Next.js, and Shopify Plus includes up to 25 Hydrogen storefronts, so both platforms now ship their own headless frameworks.
  • 5Published timelines run 10 to 16 weeks (1Digital) and three to four months (Epic Design Labs).
  • 6Ask every agency for a live headless store you can open on your own phone.

The short answer

Pick by the platform behind the storefront. On Shopify and other backends, 1Digital Agency, IWD Agency, The Frontend Company or Epic Design Labs. On BigCommerce, MAK Digital Design or Mira Commerce. For a large agency, Codal or Americaneagle. Abroad with US clients, Calashock, Naturaily or FocusReactive. For a storefront tied to an ERP or QuickBooks with AI agents, FactoryJet.

We read all 12 agencies on 23 October 2026, on their own sites or their Vercel partner listings: where each is based, the frameworks, backends and CMS it names, its Vercel tier and any price it publishes. Nobody paid to be listed. The order is not a ranking. FactoryJet wrote this list and is on it.

Short on time? Tell us your platform and what your theme cannot do and the founder will tell you whether headless is worth it for you.

On 22 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers the same question several times: “Who builds headless commerce storefronts with Next.js?” We collected 27 answers. They linked to 116 different pages; 71 of the 314 links went to list pages, and many others went to framework docs and templates rather than agencies.

So we went agency by agency. We started from the agencies those answers named and Vercel’s partner directory, and kept only agencies that show headless commerce work on Next.js and state where they are based. We dropped 17:

  • Six state no base on their site or listing: Kryeo, Roboto Studio, Digital Applied, This Dot Labs, Delicious Simplicity and Orium.
  • Six show no headless commerce on Next.js: Blazity, Lucky Media, Displace, Monogram, Bounteous and Rangle.
  • Two now redirect to other companies: Trellis and Corra.
  • One blocked our reader entirely: RMG Media.
  • Two more agencies abroad, The JIBE and Mirumee, were left out to cap the non-US group at three.

Who wrote this. FactoryJet builds Next.js storefronts, so we are on this list. Nobody paid to be included, the order is not a ranking, and our entry uses the same format as every other agency.

A few terms in plain English. Headless commerce means the storefront is separate code that talks to the commerce platform behind the scenes. Next.js is a popular framework for building that storefront. Hydrogen is Shopify’s own headless framework, and Catalyst is BigCommerce’s, which is built on Next.js. A headless CMS is where your team edits pages and content. Vercel is the company behind Next.js, and it lists partner agencies by tier.

How we built this list

  1. Start from buyers’ searches. “Next.js ecommerce” gets about 90 US Google searches a month, and “headless e commerce development company” and “headless commerce development services” about 70 each (DataForSEO, October 2026). Google showed an AI answer on all six headless searches we checked.
  2. Start from the agencies AI answers name. We took the agencies cited in those 27 answers and added commerce agencies from Vercel’s partner directory.
  3. Keep only real headless commerce work on Next.js. A Next.js badge was not enough; the agency had to show or describe a headless store.
  4. Prefer US agencies. We kept at most three based abroad, and only those that name a US client or office.
  5. Directory tiers from the directory. Vercel tiers come from Vercel’s listing. Shopify or BigCommerce tiers an agency shows on its own site are labelled as its claim.
  6. No scores we cannot prove. We have not hired these agencies. We say who each suits and one question worth asking.
  7. Prices only from the agency. One agency publishes a figure, and we quote it.

What the platforms themselves ship for headless

Before you pick an agency, know what your platform already gives it. These rows come from each platform’s own pages, read on 23 October 2026.

PlatformIts own headless frameworkWhat its pages say
ShopifyHydrogen, hosted on OxygenShopify’s docs call Hydrogen its headless toolkit and one way to build a headless Shopify store. The Plus plan page includes up to 25 Hydrogen storefronts.
BigCommerceCatalystBigCommerce’s docs say Catalyst is built with Next.js, React storefront components and its GraphQL Storefront API.
Vercel and Next.jsVercel Shop templateThe Next.js Commerce template now describes Vercel Shop, a Shopify storefront on Next.js 16 and React 19 that takes catalog, cart and checkout from Shopify.

In plain words: on Shopify, an agency can build in Hydrogen or in Next.js; on BigCommerce, Catalyst is already Next.js. Ask why an agency picks one for your store. MAK says it prefers the platform’s own framework where one exists; 1Digital defaults to Next.js.

The best headless commerce agencies for Next.js, profiled

The order is not a ranking. Agencies are grouped by where they are based and the platform they lead with, then us.

US headless commerce agencies that build Next.js storefronts on Shopify and other platforms

Four US agencies whose own headless pages name Next.js alongside Shopify. Only Epic Design Labs names the headless clients it built for, so ask the other three for live examples. Epic also sells its own commerce platform.

1. 1Digital Agency

Based: Miami, Florida. Type: Ecommerce development and marketing agency. Directory status: None shown in a platform directory we checked.

1Digital says its build standard for headless is Next.js with the App Router and React Server Components. It names Hydrogen for Shopify and Catalyst for BigCommerce where those fit better. It quotes 10 to 16 weeks for a storefront on an existing backend and does not publish price bands.

Best for:Brands that want to keep the backend that works and replace the storefront that does not, in its words.
Clients it names:Its homepage names Ladivine, Walker’s Shortbread, Steinway & Sons and MFA Boston, without saying which were headless builds.
Frameworks:Next.js with the App Router and React Server Components, Shopify Hydrogen with Oxygen, BigCommerce Catalyst.
Commerce backends:Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, commercetools, Medusa, Saleor, Swell.
CMS:Its own WorkspaceCMS.
Worth asking them:Which live headless storefronts on Next.js can you show us, since your headless page names no client?

IWD says it builds decoupled storefronts on Shopify Hydrogen, Next.js and BigCommerce Catalyst, paired with a headless CMS such as Sanity or Contentful. It says you get a firm, itemized quote on the first call.

Best for:Brands whose themed storefront can no longer carry the experience they want.
Clients it names:Logos include Rolex, Intel, YETI and Asics; case studies include Europa Eyewear, Inyo Pools and QC Supply, without saying which were headless.
Frameworks:Shopify Hydrogen, Next.js, BigCommerce Catalyst.
Commerce backends:Shopify and Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce.
CMS:Sanity, Contentful.
Worth asking them:Which brands on your logo wall run a headless storefront you built, and on which framework?

3. The Frontend Company

Based: Claymont, Delaware. Type: Frontend development company. Directory status: None shown in a platform directory we checked.

Its headless commerce page names Next.js and Hydrogen on Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, commercetools and Magento, with Payload, Contentful, Sanity or Strapi for content. None of its linked case studies is described as headless commerce. Pricing depends on scope.

Best for:Stores that are slow, take months to update or keep breaking on plugins, in its words.
Clients it names:Logos include Shopify, Deloitte and Leafworks, without saying which were headless commerce work.
Frameworks:React, Next.js, Shopify Hydrogen.
Commerce backends:Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, commercetools, Magento.
CMS:Payload, Contentful, Sanity, Strapi.

4. Epic Design Labs

Based: Portland, Oregon. Type: Ecommerce agency with its own commerce platform, Throttle. Directory status: None shown in a platform directory we checked.

Epic Design Labs says it builds storefronts on Next.js 16 with the App Router. It offers Throttle, the commerce platform it builds and runs itself, with BigCommerce or Shopify as alternatives. It gives three to four months from kickoff to launch for a catalog under about 10,000 products.

Best for:Merchants who have outgrown what a hosted platform will let them do.
Clients it names:It names MEPSelect, Stockard Tool, RV Gear Pro and OffroadGearPro as headless clients.
Frameworks:Next.js 16 with the App Router and React Server Components, Tailwind CSS, hosted on Cloudflare or Vercel.
Commerce backends:Throttle, its own platform, or BigCommerce or Shopify in headless mode.

Its Vercel listing says Mira specializes in BigCommerce plus headless and composable builds. Level Nine Sports and Staccato 2011 moved to headless BigCommerce storefronts hosted on Vercel. Its own site blocked our reader on 23 October 2026, so these facts come from the Vercel listing only.

Its Vercel listing describes headless commerce using Next.js and BigCommerce on Vercel and says it has built headless since 2009. The Davidoff of Geneva build for North America is a Next.js site on BigCommerce. Its own homepage does not mention Next.js, so the stack facts come from the listing.

What these agencies publish about price and timeline

Most headless commerce agencies quote after a call. On the pages we read on 23 October 2026, one of the 11 other agencies publishes a build price and two publish a timeline. We copied them exactly. They are each agency’s own figures, not FactoryJet prices.

How to choose a headless commerce agency: 7 steps

1. Name the limit you are hitting

Write down what your theme cannot do: a page speed you cannot reach, a layout it cannot hold, content from several systems. If you cannot name one, you may not need headless. Read headless vs monolithic commerce first.

2. Decide what stays behind the storefront

Shopify, BigCommerce or another backend. That choice narrows the agency list more than anything else on this page.

3. Ask for a live headless store on your platform

Open it on your own phone. Several agencies here show client logos without saying which were headless builds, so ask directly.

4. Ask which framework and why

Next.js, Hydrogen or Catalyst. A good answer refers to your store, your team and your hosting, not the agency’s habit.

5. See the CMS your editors will use

Ask for a login to a demo CMS and make a page yourself. Editors live with the CMS long after the agency leaves.

6. List the apps that will break

Reviews, search, subscriptions and loyalty apps often plug into a theme. Ask how each one works on the new front end, and what it costs to rebuild.

7. Agree hosting, upkeep and ownership

Who hosts the storefront, who pays for it, who fixes it when the platform changes its API, and who owns the code. Get all four in writing. Our guide on how to choose a headless commerce agency goes deeper.

A man with a grey beard in a cream sweater and a woman with a blonde ponytail in a navy shirt look at an open laptop on a meeting table beside an orange notebook
Review the proposal against your one-page brief: platform, limit, CMS, apps, hosting and ownership.

Speed is the usual reason, so measure it

Most brands go headless for speed. Google’s web.dev guidance sets good Core Web Vitals at Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real page loads. Ask each agency for the field data from a live headless store they built, not a lab score from a test tool, and compare it with your current store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who builds headless commerce storefronts with Next.js?
In the US, 1Digital Agency, IWD Agency, The Frontend Company and Epic Design Labs name Next.js on their headless pages. MAK Digital Design and Mira Commerce lead with BigCommerce. Codal and Americaneagle are large agencies with Next.js in Vercel’s directory. Calashock, Naturaily and FocusReactive are based abroad with US clients. FactoryJet builds Next.js storefronts too.
What is the best headless commerce agency?
No neutral body ranks them. Vercel’s partner directory shows tiers for agencies that build on Next.js, and Shopify and BigCommerce directories show theirs. A tier shows scale, not fit. Pick by the platform you will keep behind the storefront, then ask each agency for a live headless store on that platform that you can open on your own phone.
What is headless commerce?
Headless commerce separates the storefront shoppers see from the commerce system behind it. The platform, such as Shopify or BigCommerce, still runs products, cart, checkout and orders. A custom front end, often built in Next.js, fetches that data through an API and shows it. You get design freedom and speed control, and you take on more code to maintain.
Is Shopify a headless commerce platform?
Shopify can run headless. Shopify’s developer docs call Hydrogen its headless toolkit and say Hydrogen is one way to build a headless storefront on Shopify; a Next.js front end on the Storefront API is another. Shopify’s Plus plan page says Plus merchants can build up to 25 custom storefronts with Hydrogen and deploy them on Oxygen.
Can you give me an example of headless commerce?
Examples from the agencies on this page: Naturaily replaced Nanobébé’s Shopify theme with a Next.js front end on Shopify and Storyblok. Calashock built a Next.js site on BigCommerce for Davidoff of Geneva in North America. Mira moved Level Nine Sports and Staccato 2011 to headless BigCommerce storefronts on Vercel.
Should a headless store use Next.js or Shopify Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is Shopify’s own framework and deploys to Shopify’s Oxygen hosting. Next.js works with any backend and has a larger developer pool. MAK says it prefers Hydrogen or Catalyst where the platform maintains them and Next.js elsewhere; 1Digital defaults to Next.js and offers Hydrogen and Catalyst too. Ask an agency why it picked one for your store, not which it prefers in general.
What is BigCommerce Catalyst?
BigCommerce’s docs describe Catalyst as its composable, fully customizable headless storefront framework, built with Next.js, React storefront components and the GraphQL Storefront API. So a Catalyst store is a Next.js store. MAK Digital Design, 1Digital, IWD and Americaneagle all name Catalyst on their pages.
How much does a headless commerce build cost?
Only one agency on this page publishes a figure. MAK Digital Design says a decoupled storefront on an existing BigCommerce or Shopify backend typically runs $50,000 to $150,000 for a mid-market store, and $250,000 and up for enterprise scope. The other agencies quote after a call. The platform fee is separate.
How long does it take to build a headless storefront?
1Digital says 10 to 16 weeks for a storefront on an existing backend. Epic Design Labs says three to four months from kickoff to launch for a catalog under about 10,000 products. Timelines grow with integrations, content migration and the number of custom page types.
Is headless Shopify worth it?
It is worth it when the theme blocks something you need: page speed you cannot reach, a design the theme cannot hold, or content from several systems on one page. It is not worth it for a standard catalog that a good theme already serves well, because you will pay to build and maintain more code. Ask an agency to name the limit you are hitting.
How much does Shopify headless cost?
Two bills. The Shopify plan, and the storefront build. Shopify lists Plus at $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term in the US; Hydrogen storefronts are included on Plus. The only published build figure on this page is MAK’s $50,000 to $150,000 for a mid-market decoupled storefront.
What are the disadvantages of headless commerce?
More code to own. Shopify apps and theme features that inject into a theme do not work on a custom front end without rework. Content editors need a CMS set up for them. Every change to the storefront needs a developer. The gains are speed and design control, so headless pays off only when those matter enough to fund the upkeep.
Which headless CMS works best for ecommerce?
The agencies here name Sanity, Contentful, Storyblok, Payload, Strapi and Builder.io most. Pick by who edits content. Storyblok and Builder.io give marketers a visual editor. Sanity and Contentful are flexible for structured content. Ask the agency which CMS its last three headless stores used and why.
What are the top headless commerce platforms?
The backends the agencies on this page name most are Shopify, BigCommerce, commercetools, Adobe Commerce and Medusa. Saleor, Swell, Commerce Layer and Crystallize appear too. Shopify and BigCommerce each ship their own Next.js-friendly framework, Hydrogen and Catalyst, which shortens a build.
What is Vercel’s partner directory and does the tier matter?
Vercel, the company behind Next.js, lists solution partners by tier, such as Platinum and Silver. Of the agencies on this page, Americaneagle shows Platinum, and Mira, Codal, Calashock and FocusReactive show Silver. A tier shows a working relationship with Vercel. It does not prove commerce work, so ask for a live store.
Does a headless storefront improve Core Web Vitals?
It can, because the agency controls every script on the page. Google’s web.dev guidance sets good scores at Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile. Ask for field data from a live headless store, not a lab score.
What is a headless e-commerce development company?
A headless commerce development company builds the custom storefront, connects it to the commerce platform and a CMS, and often runs the hosting and upkeep. The companies on this page all describe headless commerce website development services. Some also move stores between platforms, connect ERPs or build apps.
Is Next.js good for ecommerce?
It is widely used for it. BigCommerce built Catalyst on Next.js, and Vercel’s Next.js Commerce template now ships as Vercel Shop, a Shopify storefront on Next.js 16 and React 19. Next.js lets a store mix pages built ahead of time with pages built per request, which suits catalogs. The trade-off is more code than a theme.
Should I hire an agency based outside the US?
It can work if the agency names US clients and gives enough overlap with your hours. Naturaily names Nanobébé, FocusReactive names NotSoApe, and Calashock lists a New York office. Ask how many hours a day your team and theirs overlap, who your day-to-day contact is, and which law the contract uses.
What should I ask a headless commerce agency before signing?
Ask for a live headless store on your platform that you can open on your phone. Ask why they would pick Next.js, Hydrogen or Catalyst for you. Ask which CMS your editors will use and to see it. Ask who hosts the storefront and who pays. Ask what breaks in your current apps and how they will replace it. Ask who owns the code.
Can I go headless without leaving Shopify?
Yes. Shopify stays the commerce backend: products, cart, checkout and orders. Only the storefront changes. Shopify’s own Hydrogen is one way, and a Next.js front end on the Storefront API is another. Checkout can stay on Shopify, so Shop Pay keeps working. That is the most common path for the Shopify agencies on this page.
Does FactoryJet build headless storefronts in Next.js?
Yes. FactoryJet builds headless storefronts in Next.js on Shopify, BigCommerce or Commerceflo by FactoryJet, with Sanity for content, and connects the store to QuickBooks or an ERP. It can add AI agents for order work. It shows a working draft built with the buyer’s own products before a contract, and the client owns the code.
