"Ecommerce SEO is a technical catalogue problem, not content marketing, and most SEO agencies cannot do it. We compared eight US ecommerce SEO agencies on the five technical capabilities that actually separate them. Disclosure: we are on the list, at number eight."
Key Takeaways
- 1Ecommerce SEO is a technical catalogue discipline, not content marketing. Faceted navigation, crawl budget, product schema, out-of-stock URL handling and pagination are where stores win or lose, and none of them appear in a normal SEO proposal.
- 2The five-question technical test in this post will tell you in one call whether an agency actually does ecommerce SEO or does content SEO for ecommerce clients. Those are different services at the same price.
- 3Our researched 2026 shortlist: OuterBox, Inflow, Uproer, SmartSites, 1Digital Agency, Searchbloom, ROI Revolution, and FactoryJet (disclosed self-inclusion, placed eighth).
- 4OuterBox was named in 10 of 12 AI engine answers, the highest single score we have recorded across five of these studies.
- 5Amazon marketing is not ecommerce SEO. They are separate disciplines with separate agencies, and conflating them is a common and expensive mistake.
- 6"Ecommerce seo agency" carries a $126 average cost per click, among the highest in any agency category, which tells you what one store client is worth and why the market is crowded.
- 7This page is a shortlist for organic growth. If you need the store built or replatformed, our ecommerce development agency roundup covers that instead.
The short answer: OuterBox is the strongest US ecommerce SEO agency on the evidence, named in 10 of our 12 AI engine answers, the highest score across five of these studies. Inflow is the strongest ecommerce-only performance shop. Uproer is the strongest small specialist. FactoryJet is eighth and we say why below.
Ecommerce SEO is a catalogue problem, not a content problem
This is the thing that decides whether you hire well, and most roundups on this term skip it entirely.
General SEO is largely a content exercise: publish useful pages, earn links, rank. Ecommerce SEO is largely a technical catalogue exercise. You have thousands of near-identical product URLs. You have faceted navigation that can generate millions of crawlable filter combinations. You have products that go out of stock, come back, and get discontinued. You have category pages quietly competing with each other for the same term.
Content barely features in any of that. So an agency that answers an ecommerce brief with a content calendar has misread the job, and you will spend a year publishing buying guides while your filters eat your crawl budget.
The five questions that separate the two, in one call
Ask all five. You will know inside ten minutes.
- How would you handle our faceted navigation? The highest-impact technical job on most large stores. A real answer involves canonicals, parameter handling, robots directives and selective indexing, and it will be specific to your filter set.
- What is our crawl budget currently being spent on? A specialist wants your log files. A generalist has never asked for them.
- How should product schema be implemented, and by whom? Watch for whether they raise accuracy. Schema saying in stock on a sold-out page is worse than no schema.
- What happens to a URL when a product is permanently discontinued? The wrong answer is 404 or redirect everything to the homepage. The right answer distinguishes temporary from permanent and redirects to a genuine equivalent, or the parent category.
- How should pagination and category depth work at our catalogue size? If the answer does not change between a 500-product store and a 50,000-product store, they have not done this.
An agency that does ecommerce SEO answers all five in specifics. An agency that does content SEO for ecommerce clients will steer the conversation back to blog topics. Both charge about the same.
Which page do you actually need? This one is for organic growth on a store that already exists. If the store itself needs building or replatforming, our ecommerce development agency roundup covers that instead, ranked on platform partner tier rather than SEO capability. If you have decided to hire for SEO, scope is on our ecommerce SEO service page.
Disclosure, up front: FactoryJet is on this list, at number eight. Everything about the other seven was fetched from their own websites on 7 September 2026 and is quoted or attributed. Nobody paid to appear.
The eight compared
| Agency | Best for | Based | Stated position |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. OuterBox | Large catalogues | Akron, OH | 2004, 300+ staff, "2M+ Page #1 Google Rankings" |
| 2. Inflow | Ecommerce-only performance | Denver and Tampa | 2007, ecommerce clients exclusively |
| 3. Uproer | Smaller stores, GEO and AEO | Saint Paul, MN | Founded 2017, ecommerce SEO and SEM |
| 4. SmartSites | SEO plus paid media | US, remote | "900+ Websites Launched", Google Premier Partner |
| 5. 1Digital Agency | Mid-market, four platforms | Philadelphia, PA | 2012, "400+ brands", 4.9/5 from 941+ reviews |
| 6. Searchbloom | Published rates, documented method | South Jordan, UT | ART framework, SEO from $3,000/mo |
| 7. ROI Revolution | Retail media breadth | Raleigh, NC | Founded 2002, "300+ brands" |
| 8. FactoryJet (this is us) | Stores wanting organic plus AI search | Remote, US coverage | Smaller than the seven above, see below |
The eight reviewed
1. OuterBox, best for large catalogues
The clearest consensus pick we have recorded in this series: named in 10 of 12 AI engine answers. Founded 2004 with offices in Akron, Houston and Rochester, stating "more than 300 digital marketing experts" and "2M+ Page #1 Google Rankings" across "1000+ Successful Client Partnerships". Clients include Lowe's, JEGS, Sur La Table, Matco Tools and Golfballs.com.
What matters here is that ecommerce SEO is a named practice rather than a service page, and that its client list is heavy on large-catalogue retailers. Large catalogues are mostly a crawl budget and templating problem, and that is learned on hundreds of thousands of URLs, not hundreds.
Consider it if your catalogue runs to thousands of SKUs. Look elsewhere if you are small enough to be a minor account there.
2. Inflow, best ecommerce-only performance agency
Founded 2007, Denver and Tampa, and notable for working exclusively with ecommerce brands. That focus shows in the published results: "126% increase in organic traffic YOY" for Simms Fishing, a "First $1 Million Month" for Vitrazza, and 413% ad revenue growth for KEH Camera. States "130+ Years Combined Industry Experience" and "$7 Million+ Media Managed".
Google Premier Partner, Buy With Prime Agency Partner, and a Clutch Top Digital Marketing Company award as a women-owned business. Clients include America's Test Kitchen, Mountain House and Gaia.
Consider it if you want an agency that has never had to learn ecommerce on someone else's account. Look elsewhere if you need the store built too.
3. Uproer, best small specialist
Founded in May 2017 by Griffin Roer in Saint Paul, Minnesota, after "years of working as an SEO consultant to some of the country's largest retail and tech brands". It offers "SEO & SEM Solutions for Ecommerce" and, unusually for an agency this size, names GEO and AEO among its solutions rather than treating AI search as a future problem.
It also publishes its own ecommerce SEO agency roundup, which currently ranks on page one for this term. We mention that because it is the same play this page is making, and it works.
Consider it if you want senior attention on a smaller account. Look elsewhere if you need a large team or enterprise references.
4. SmartSites, best for SEO plus paid media
States "900+ Websites Launched" and "$100M+ Client Revenue Generated", with a complete accreditation set: Google Premier Partner, Microsoft Advertising Select Partner 2025, Meta Business Partner and Amazon Ads Verified Partner, plus Inc. 5000 recognition.
Consider it if you want organic and paid from one team. Look elsewhere if you want a pure SEO specialist.
5. 1Digital Agency, best mid-market across platforms
Founded 2012 in Philadelphia, working across Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and Magento with "50+ eCommerce specialists" and "400+ brands" served. Its review transparency is the best here: "4.9/5 rating across 941+ verified reviews" aggregated across Google, Trustpilot, Clutch and Facebook.
Results are published with engagement length attached, which is rarer and more honest than a bare percentage: "+471.2% Online revenue growth over a 24-month engagement".
Consider it if you are on Magento or WooCommerce, where strong agencies have thinned out. Look elsewhere if you need enterprise scale.
6. Searchbloom, best published rates and documented method
South Jordan, Utah. The only agency here that publishes what it charges: SEO from $3,000 a month. Works to a named ART framework (Authority, Relevance, Technology), states "No Lengthy Contracts" and retention "over 95 percent", lists ecommerce SEO as a distinct specialism alongside Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization, and holds a Search Engine Land Award win from 2021.
Consider it if you want the number before the call. Look elsewhere if your budget is below its floor.
7. ROI Revolution, best retail media breadth
Founded 2002 in Raleigh, North Carolina, stating "300+ brands" and an unusually wide platform footprint: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Target, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Wayfair, Roku, TikTok and more. Certifications include Google Premier Partner 2026, Microsoft Elite Partner 2026 and Amazon Ads Verified Partner. Clients include Peter Millar, Guy Harvey and Steiner Tractor.
It is more performance and retail media than pure organic, so weigh it accordingly, but for a store selling across marketplaces as well as its own site that breadth is genuinely useful.
Consider it if you sell across several retail platforms. Look elsewhere if you want organic search depth specifically.
8. FactoryJet, for stores wanting organic and AI search together (disclosure: this is us)
Ecommerce is our core and SEO for stores is a large part of it, so this is home ground. We are still eighth, because the seven above have deeper published ecommerce SEO records. OuterBox has 300 staff and two million page-one rankings. 1Digital has 941 verified reviews. We do not, and there is no point writing around it on a page you can check.
What we add is current rather than historic: we treat citation in AI answer engines as a deliverable alongside Google rankings, tracking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity separately, because we measure per-engine citation rather than assuming Google performance carries across. Most ecommerce SEO agencies are not yet reporting that at all. Month-to-month, founder on the account. Scope is on the ecommerce SEO service page.
Consider us if you want organic and AI visibility as one project on a small or mid-sized store. Look elsewhere if you have a very large catalogue. That is OuterBox, ranked first here for that reason.
Amazon marketing is not ecommerce SEO
Worth separating, because conflating them is common and expensive.
Amazon SEO optimises listings inside Amazon's own search: conversion rate, reviews, ad spend and Amazon's ranking system. Ecommerce SEO optimises your own store in Google. Different signals, different tooling, usually different agencies. Nuanced Media, founded 2010 and stating "$1B+ GMV managed" with "16+ years Amazon experience", is an example of a genuine Amazon specialist, publishing results such as 295% first-year sales growth for Lux Unfiltered.
If you sell in both places you need both capabilities, but you should know which one you are buying on any given call.
Two agencies we did not include, and why
Coalition Technologies scored 7 of 12 in our test and ranks on page one for this term, so its absence is not an oversight. Its site returned an HTTP 403 to our fetch on 7 September 2026, so we could not verify a single claim and excluded it rather than repeat what other roundups say. We applied the same rule in our ecommerce development roundup.
Polaris Agency was named and has strong published work, including a 644% increase for Dune London and European Search Awards 2025 recognition. It is headquartered in Gerrards Cross in the UK, so it is out of scope for a US list. Noting it rather than dropping it silently, because if you are UK-based it is worth a look.
Methodology
Run on 7 September 2026 and repeatable. We asked ChatGPT (gpt-5.6), Claude (Sonnet 5), Gemini (3.8 Flash) and Perplexity (Sonar Pro), each with live web search enabled, to recommend US ecommerce SEO agencies across three phrasings. Twelve answers. OuterBox scored 10 of 12, Inflow 8, Coalition Technologies and SmartSites 7, 1Digital 6, WebFX and Searchbloom 5, First Page Sage 4.
We then pulled the live US Google results for the head terms, and fetched each shortlisted agency's own website, recording only claims stated there. Where a site does not state a founding year or team size, we left it out rather than estimate it.
Four agencies here also appear on our ecommerce development roundup, because the consensus sets genuinely overlap and omitting the strongest agencies to avoid repetition would make this list worse. The two pages rank on different criteria: that one on platform partner tier and build capability, this one on technical SEO capability. Codal, Groove Commerce and We Make Websites appear there and not here because they are build shops rather than SEO specialists.
Nobody paid to appear. No review scores were invented.
