"AI MVP development cost in 2026 from six published estimates side by side, why their tiers disagree, US, UK and Australian figures, the seven things that set your price, which AI model fits an MVP, four ways to build it and six checks for hiring the builder."

Key Takeaways

  • 1Groovy Web puts an AI MVP at $5,000 to $50,000 or more in 2026: $5,000 to $12,000 for a prototype, $12,000 to $30,000 for a lean MVP and $30,000 to $50,000 or more for a production-ready one (read 18 October 2026).
  • 2Fitworks gives higher tiers for the same names: $10,000 to $25,000 for a validation prototype, $25,000 to $60,000 for a focused AI MVP and $60,000 to $150,000 or more for an advanced one (published 22 July 2026).
  • 3SFAI Labs starts its basic tier at $15,000 to $40,000 and says most projects land in its moderate tier of $40,000 to $120,000, built in 8 to 14 weeks (read 18 October 2026).
  • 4The sources disagree because they price different scopes: number of data sources, user accounts and roles, payments, a human approval step, and audit logs with a security review.
  • 5Clutch reports an average AI development project of $120,594.55 across all AI projects reviewed on its site (updated 21 September 2026). That is every kind of AI project, so it is no guide to an MVP price.
  • 6At ECB reference rates of 16 October 2026, a $25,000 to $60,000 focused MVP is roughly £18,700 to £45,000 in the UK and A$35,900 to A$86,200 in Australia.
  • 7No figure on this page is a FactoryJet price. FactoryJet quotes a fixed price in writing after a short scoping call.

The short answer

An AI MVP typically costs $5,000 to $50,000 to build in 2026 for a lean, one-job product, and $60,000 to $150,000 or more once it needs logins, several data sources, audit logs and a security review, going by published 2026 ranges from Groovy Web, Fitworks and SFAI Labs. Scope moves the price far more than the AI model does.

How we made this page

FactoryJet builds AI MVPs and custom AI agents, so weigh this page with that in mind.On 18 October 2026 we read the top 10 Google results and the People Also Ask questions for the main AI MVP cost searches in the US, UK and Australia (DataForSEO). The same day we asked 36 buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, and read the pages they cited.

Every price below was re-read on the source's own page on 18 October 2026 and is linked where it appears. Written by Bhavesh Barot, founder of FactoryJet. No figure on this page is a FactoryJet price.

AI MVP development is the step most startups and small businesses now take before they commit to a full AI product, and "ai mvp development" draws about 480 Google searches a month in the US with almost no competition (DataForSEO, 18 October 2026). The harder question sits behind it: how much does it cost to build an AI app or an AI MVP, and what should the first version cost? Ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity and you get a confident range taken from one agency blog. Among the pages those assistants cited for this question on 18 October were guides from Bitsens, Groovy Web, Fitworks and SFAI Labs. Each publishes a different answer, and none explains why it differs from the others. This guide puts them side by side.

We cover the published ranges, why the same tier name costs three times more on one site than another, the seven things that decide your own price, what an AI MVP costs in the UK and Australia, which AI model fits a first build, four ways to get it built, and how to hire someone you can trust with it. One thing we leave out on purpose: what the product costs to keep running after launch. That depends on your usage, and any honest figure comes from a quote scoped to you.

AI MVP cost at a glance (2026)

Three of the most cited 2026 guides use near-identical tier names. Their prices do not line up. Here they are as each firm published them, read on 18 October 2026.

TierWhat it doesGroovy WebFitworksSFAI LabsTypical timeline
Validation prototypeOne AI job on a hosted model, a thin screen, little or no login, no real integrations$5,000 to $12,000 (prototype)$10,000 to $25,000$15,000 to $40,000 (basic)2 to 4 weeks (Groovy Web, Fitworks); 3 to 6 weeks (SFAI Labs)
Focused MVPReal logins, one or two integrations, a proper screen, basic checks on the AI answers$12,000 to $30,000 (lean MVP)$25,000 to $60,000$40,000 to $120,000 (moderate)4 to 8 weeks (Groovy Web); 6 to 10 weeks (Fitworks); 8 to 14 weeks (SFAI Labs)
Production-ready MVPAnswers from your own data, several integrations, monitoring, access control and security review$30,000 to $50,000 or more$60,000 to $150,000 or more (advanced)$120,000 to $250,000 (complex)8 to 14 weeks (Groovy Web); 10 to 20 weeks or more (Fitworks); 14 to 20 weeks (SFAI Labs)

Read the table by row, and the same "focused MVP" can be $12,000 at the low end of Groovy Web or $120,000 at the top of SFAI Labs: a tenfold gap. SFAI Labs also has a fourth tier, enterprise, at $250,000 to $500,000 or more over 20 to 30 weeks or longer, for multi-system and regulated builds. Sources: Groovy Web, Fitworks, SFAI Labs.

One more figure gets quoted on this topic, so here is what it measures. Clutch's AI pricing guide (updated 21 September 2026) says the average AI development project reviewed on Clutch cost $120,594.55, had a typical timeline of 10 months, and that AI projects reviewed on Clutch typically cost $10,000 to $49,999. That average covers every kind of AI project reviewed on Clutch, from chatbots to machine learning platforms. It is not an MVP price, and a few large projects pull an average well above what most buyers pay.

What published 2026 estimates say, side by side

Six firms that publish AI MVP cost guides, each labelled as that firm's own estimate. We read every page on 18 October 2026. The "how it splits" column shows the dimension each firm prices by, which is half the reason the totals differ.

Firm (page date)Headline estimateHow it splits the priceWorth knowing
Groovy Web (23 June 2026)$5,000 to $50,000 or moreThree tiers by goal: learn, get real users, launch on real dataExcludes model usage from the build price
Fitworks (22 July 2026)$25,000 to $60,000 for most professional buildsThree tiers, plus four product types from $25,000 to $100,000 or moreGives a typical timeline for every tier
SFAI Labs (26 February 2026)$15,000 to $300,000 or moreFour complexity tiers with team sizeMedian mid-complexity project $75,000 to $120,000
Bitsens (18 May 2026)$0 to $250,000 or moreFour build routes: do it yourself, builder plus engineer, AI agency, regulatedAI agency route $35,000 to $80,000 over 8 to 14 weeks
Cogniq AI (29 September 2026)$25,000 to $120,000Team size x weeks x hourly rateShows the arithmetic, so you can check any quote
Upsilon (updated 8 September 2026)$25,000 to $100,000 or moreBy AI approach: hosted model, custom model, data workPuts a conventional MVP at $25,000 to $75,000 for comparison

Two patterns stand out. The firms that price by goal (Groovy Web) or by route (Bitsens) start low, because their cheapest option is a test of an idea and not a product. The firms that price by complexity or team (SFAI Labs, Cogniq AI) start higher, because their cheapest tier already assumes a professional team on a product. Neither is wrong. Before you trust a range, check which of those two things it describes. For a general MVP development cost with no AI in it, Upsilon's $25,000 to $75,000 is the useful comparison, and the same spread shows up across AI app development cost guides.

On Google, the US results for "ai mvp development cost" on 18 October were mostly general MVP cost guides (American Chase, Space-O Technologies, Beevr, Zynocode, Upsilon) and a Reddit thread. In the UK the first page held Aalpha, Upsilon, Softkraft, Milo Solutions and Cogniq AI. Only Cogniq AI's page on that UK list was about AI MVPs specifically.

Why the sources disagree: five scope items that move a tier

Put the six guides next to each other and the same five items push a build from one tier to the next. Count how many your MVP needs and you will know which column of the table above to read.

  1. Number of data sources. One spreadsheet or folder of PDFs is a prototype. Answers drawn from your CRM, help desk and document store at once need a pipeline that reads, cleans and indexes each one.
  2. User accounts and roles. A demo for five testers can share one login. A product needs sign-up, password reset, and rules about who sees which records.
  3. Payments. Charging users means Stripe or a similar provider, plans, invoices and failed-card handling. Bitsens lists payments among the parts an AI builder tool cannot finish on its own.
  4. A human approval step.If the AI drafts a refund, changes an order or emails a customer, a person should approve it first. That needs a queue, a screen and a record of who approved what. Cogniq AI lists "human approval for sensitive actions" as part of its workflow agent tier.
  5. Audit logs and security review.Selling to a bank, hospital or large company brings single sign-on, a log of every action, data isolation between customers and a security questionnaire. Bitsens calls this the point where "the MVP is no longer a build problem".

A build with none of the five is a prototype on every list. Two or three puts you in the focused MVP row. All five puts you in the production-ready row or above, whatever the firm calls it.

A woman with a grey bob in a white linen shirt moves a blank orange sticky note between columns of blank yellow notes on a glass wall while a young man in a green hoodie watches.
Every scope item you move into the first version moves the build up a tier. Decide what waits.

What an AI MVP is, and what MVP means in AI

An AI MVP is the first version of a product with AI inside it that real users can use to do one real job. MVP stands for minimum viable product. If you came here asking "what is MVP in AI" or looking up the MVP AI meaning (what is an MVP in AI?), that is the meaning of MVP in AI product work, and it has nothing to do with sports awards. Whether people type "AI MVP" or "MVP AI", they mean the same thing. Fitworks puts it well: a useful MVP "connects the AI capability to data, an interface, business rules, and a measurable outcome".

The word that matters is "viable". A model answering questions in a chat window is a demo. It becomes an MVP when a support agent, a buyer or a customer can use it on real work and you can measure whether it helped. Three stages get confused, and each has its own price and pass mark.

StageQuestion it answersWho uses itWhat it usually includes
Proof of conceptCan the AI do this task on our data at all?The builder and one or two of your staffA script or notebook, sample data, a pass mark
AI MVPWill real users use it, and does it help?A small group of real usersA screen, logins, one or two integrations, answer checks
PilotDoes it hold up in daily work for a team? One team or one customer groupMonitoring, support, a person who owns it
ProductionCan everyone rely on it?Everyone it was built forSecurity review, audit logs, scaling, a support plan

If you have not yet tested whether the AI can do the task, start one step earlier. Our guide to taking an AI proof of concept to production covers how to scope that first test and what it costs.

An AI MVP does one job for real users. The test is whether the person doing that job finds it useful.

Seven things that decide your AI MVP development cost

The five scope items above set your tier. Inside a tier, these seven decide whether you land at the bottom or the top of the range.

  1. Data readiness.Clean, well-labelled data in one place keeps a build cheap. Scanned PDFs, five spreadsheet versions of the price list, or records nobody has permission to share add weeks. Groovy Web calls data readiness "the line item teams forget and the one that most often blows estimates".
  2. Integrations. Each system the MVP reads from or writes to (HubSpot, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Xero, Shopify, an ERP) is its own build and test job. SFAI Labs estimates each integration point at $5,000 to $15,000 of development effort.
  3. Model approach. Calling a hosted model from OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude) or Google (Gemini) is the cheapest route. Adding retrieval, where the AI looks things up in your own documents before it answers, adds a pipeline and testing. Fine-tuning or training your own model is the most expensive: SFAI Labs says custom model training adds 40 to 80%.
  4. Evaluation and testing. An evaluation set is a list of real questions or tasks with the answers you expect. Every change to the prompt or model gets checked against it. Bitsens puts setting one up at 1 to 3 weeks of work, and says a quote that does not name one leaves the AI outside engineering control.
  5. Security and privacy. Personal data brings GDPR in the UK and EU and the Privacy Act in Australia. Health, finance and payment data bring more. Each adds access control, logging and review time.
  6. The user interface. A simple web screen is the low end. A mobile app adds iOS and Android screens to build and test plus app store review, which is why MVP app development cost guides run higher than web-only ones.
  7. Who owns the code. A builder who keeps the repository, the model accounts or the prompts may quote lower and charge you later to move. Paying for code you own from day one is cheaper over two phases.

Cogniq AI gives the simplest way to check any quote against these seven: cost is roughly team size x weeks x 40 hours x blended hourly rate. Its example is 2.5 people for 10 weeks, which is 1,000 hours. At $35 an hour that is $35,000, at $60 an hour $60,000, at $90 an hour $90,000 and at $120 an hour $120,000. If a quote does not fit that arithmetic, ask what is missing from it.

By product type, Fitworks and Cogniq AI agree more than their headline ranges suggest:

Kind of AI MVPFitworks estimateCogniq AI estimateCogniq AI timeline
Single-feature tool (summarise, draft, classify, extract)$25,000 to $75,000 (content tool)About $25,000 to $50,0006 to 8 weeks
Knowledge assistant over your own documents$30,000 to $50,000About $40,000 to $80,0008 to 10 weeks
Customer-support assistant$35,000 to $70,000Not listed separatelyNot listed
Workflow agent that takes actions in other systems$45,000 to $100,000 or moreAbout $60,000 to $120,00010 to 14 weeks
Product built on a fine-tuned or custom modelNot listed separately$100,000 or more14 weeks or more

If your first product is an AI agent that acts in your systems, our guide to what an AI agent costs goes deeper on that kind of build, and the enterprise AI agent cost guide covers companies with 500 or more staff.

A woman with silver hair tied back in a denim shirt sorts plain cardboard file folders into two stacks beside a monitor showing grey rows and a few orange rows, an orange folder on top.
Sorting out where the data lives, and who may use it, is the cheapest week of any AI MVP.

Which AI is best for an MVP?

For most AI MVPs in 2026 the answer is a hosted model from one of the big three, called through its API (the connection your code uses to send a request and get an answer back). Which one depends on your job, and the only reliable way to choose is to run your own 30 to 50 real examples through two of them and compare. Each vendor publishes its own starting advice, read on 18 October 2026:

  • OpenAI. Its models page says to start with GPT-6 Astra for complex reasoning and coding if you are unsure, GPT-6.1 Sol to balance quality and speed, and GPT-6 Luna for high-volume work.
  • Anthropic (Claude). Its models overview says to start with Claude Opus 5.5 for most workloads, and that all current Claude models take text and images, work in many languages and can use tools.
  • Google (Gemini). Its models page lists Gemini 4 Argon as the flagship reasoning model with a 1M context window, meaning it can read very long documents in one go, and Gemini 3.8 Live for low-delay voice agents.
  • Open models. Meta describes its Muse Spark Open as an open-weight model you can run anywhere. Open models suit an MVP when data must stay on servers you control, at the price of more setup work.

Three fit questions matter more than any ranking. Does the model get your examples right? Do the vendor's data terms suit you? OpenAI's enterprise privacy pagesays it does not use business data to train its models by default, and Anthropic's privacy center says the same for its commercial products and API. And does it sit well with what you already use, such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud or AWS? Whatever you pick, ask the builder to keep the model behind one layer of code so you can switch later. In an AI MVP the model is usually the cheapest thing to change and the data the hardest.

AI MVP cost in the UK and Australia (2026)

None of the six guides above publishes separate UK or Australian figures, so we converted the Fitworks tiers, the middle of the three US sources, at the European Central Bank reference rates for 16 October 2026 (USD 1.1253, GBP 0.84385 and AUD 1.6171 to the euro). That gives about £0.75 and A$1.44 to the US dollar. Figures are rounded to the nearest 100 and exclude VAT and GST.

Fitworks tierUS (USD)UK (GBP)Australia (AUD)
Validation prototype$10,000 to $25,000£7,500 to £18,700A$14,400 to A$35,900
Focused AI MVP$25,000 to $60,000£18,700 to £45,000A$35,900 to A$86,200
Advanced AI MVP$60,000 to $150,000 or more£45,000 to £112,500 or moreA$86,200 to A$215,600 or more

A straight conversion is a starting point, not a local price, because every firm sets its own rates. For figures that UK and Australian firms publish in their own currency, see our UK AI cost guide and Australian AI cost guide. If you are in either market, our UK AI development and Australia AI development pages describe how we work with clients there.

Two rules add review time in these markets. In the UK, the ICO's guidance on AI and data protectioncovers accountability, fairness, security and what to consider in a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) for AI; the ICO notes the guidance is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act. In Australia, the OAIC's guidance on commercially available AI products (updated 17 January 2025) says the Privacy Act applies to all uses of AI involving personal information, and recommends that organisations do not enter personal information into publicly available generative AI tools. Budget a few days for either, on top of the build.

Four routes to build an AI MVP, and who each suits

Bitsens makes the point that in 2026 the route you pick decides the cost more than the feature list. Here are the four routes, with the rates and ranges each source publishes.

RoutePublished cost or rateSuitsWatch for
Build it yourself with an AI MVP builder$0 to $3,000 out of pocket over 2 to 6 weeks (Bitsens)A technical founder testing one idea with 20 to 50 usersLogin, payments and data security are where these builds break
AI builder tool plus a contract engineer$5,000 to $15,000 over 4 to 8 weeks (Bitsens); freelancers $75 to $150 an hour (Layer3 Labs)A non-technical founder who needs a working product, not a demoFind an engineer who already knows the builder you used
AI development firm$35,000 to $80,000 over 8 to 14 weeks (Bitsens); boutique agencies $125 to $250 an hour (Layer3 Labs); most Clutch-listed AI firms $25 to $49 an hourStartups and companies with 10 to 50 or 50 to 500 staff that need a product real customers will useAsk who writes the code and who owns the repository
In-house hireMedian annual wage for US software developers $135,980, May 2025 (BLS)Companies planning a multi-year AI product roadmapHiring takes months, and one developer rarely covers design, data and testing

AI tools for MVP development changed the first two rows of this table most. Bitsens names Lovable, Bolt and v0 for the screens and database, and Cursor with Claude Code for the engineering, and says the builder plus engineer route "has gotten cheapest, fastest" in the last 18 months. Bubble is the older no-code option in the same group. An AI MVP builder still stops at the hard parts: the AI calls, the integrations and the testing of the answers. For a full comparison of the people routes, read AI agency vs in-house vs freelancer, and for hourly rates by role, our guide on how to hire an AI agent developer.

A young man with wavy red hair in a grey t-shirt works at a standing desk by a window, arranging grey layout blocks and one orange block on a monitor, an orange tumbler on the desk.
An AI MVP builder gets a screen up in days. The AI calls, integrations and answer testing still need an engineer.

How to build an MVP with AI: six steps

Whoever builds it, the order of work is the same. Following it keeps the first version small enough to stay in the bottom half of any range above.

  1. Pick one job.One task, one kind of user, one measure of success. "Draft a reply to every return request within two minutes" is a job. "AI for customer service" is not.
  2. Collect 30 to 50 real examples with the right answers. This becomes your evaluation set, and the first thing any builder should ask you for.
  3. Test two hosted models on those examples. Score the answers before writing any product code. Many MVPs change direction at this step, which is the cheapest place to change.
  4. Build the thinnest screen and the one integration the job needs. Everything else on the wish list waits for phase two.
  5. Add a person to approve risky actions. Anything that changes a record, spends money or reaches a customer gets a human check in the first version.
  6. Put it in front of five to ten real users for two weeks. Measure against your examples and your success measure, then decide what the next phase is.

If you want a structured way to check whether your company is ready for step one, our AI readiness assessment checklist walks through data, systems and ownership in a scorecard.

How to hire someone to build your AI MVP: six checks

Cost is half of the question buyers put to AI assistants. The other half, asked in nearly the same words in the US, UK and Australia, is how to find a reliable developer for the job. These six checks separate the builders who will finish from the ones who will not.

  1. A working demo on a sample of your data. Slides and portfolios show what a firm built for someone else. A demo on your own 20 documents shows what it can do for you.
  2. You own the repository from day one. The code sits in your GitHub or GitLab account, and the model and cloud accounts are in your company name.
  3. A fixed price per phase. Each phase has its own written scope, price and finish line, so you can stop after any of them.
  4. Named people. Ask who will write the code, who tests it and who you call when it breaks.
  5. How they test the AI answers. Ask to see an evaluation set from a past project, and how they guard against prompt injection, the first risk on the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications.
  6. What happens after launch, in writing. Which defects they fix, for how long, and how changes are quoted.

For the full list of questions and the red flags behind each, see questions to ask an AI development company. Before you sign, run the contract through our AI development contract checklist, and if a previous build stalled, why AI agent projects fail covers the usual causes.

Seen from behind, a developer in a black hijab and a white-haired client in a tan blazer watch a monitor showing grey boxes linked to one orange box in a glass-walled meeting room.
The first hiring check: the builder shows the AI working on a sample of your own data before you sign.

What to have ready before you ask for an AI MVP quote

A quote is only as good as the brief behind it. Bring these five things to every firm and the prices you get back will describe the same product.

  • The one job, in two or three sentences, with who does it today and how long it takes them.
  • Sample data: 20 to 50 real emails, documents, tickets or records, with personal details removed if you can.
  • A systems list: every system the MVP must read from or write to, such as HubSpot, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Xero, Shopify or your ERP.
  • A success measure: the number that would make you build phase two, such as time per task or share of drafts approved unchanged.
  • A deadline, and the reason for it, such as a funding round, a trade show or a customer pilot.

Security, data ownership and governance for an AI MVP

Governance sounds like a large-company word, but an AI MVP needs a small version of it from day one, because the first real users bring real data. Scale it to your size.

  • Startups and companies with 10 to 50 staff: keep personal data out of public AI chat tools, put the model and cloud accounts in the company name, and log every AI action in the first version.
  • Companies with 50 to 500 staff: add role-based access, a named owner for the AI system, and a written check against the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, which NIST describes as intended for voluntary use and released on 26 January 2023, with a generative AI profile added in July 2024.
  • Companies with 500 or more staff:expect single sign-on, a security questionnaire, data isolation and audit logs before any pilot. That is the work that moves an MVP into SFAI Labs' complex and enterprise tiers and Bitsens' regulated route, which start at $120,000 on both sites.

Data ownership is the item buyers skip most often. Write into the contract that your data, the prompts, the evaluation set and the code are yours, and where the data is stored. For UK users, that also means GDPR obligations; for Australian users, the Privacy Act.

How FactoryJet builds an AI MVP

FactoryJet is an AI MVP development company for startups and growing businesses in the US, UK and Australia. We build custom AI agents and AI products, and the integrations they need with HubSpot, Salesforce, Xero, WhatsApp, Odoo, NetSuite and other systems. Our terms are the same on every build:

  • We show working software on a sample of your own data before you sign.
  • Each phase is scoped, priced and signed on its own, so the MVP is the first paid step and you decide on the next.
  • You own the code and the repository from day one.
  • The AI and cloud accounts can sit in your own name, billed to you at cost, with no markup.
  • Defects are fixed inside the build price for a cover period agreed before work starts.
  • Support is optional: each change is quoted and approved, with no monthly minimum.

FactoryJet quotes a fixed price in writing after a short scoping call. If you want us to, we can keep managing the servers, AI models, APIs and maintenance after launch so your team does not have to. Read more on our AI development and AI agent development pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build an AI MVP in 2026?
Published 2026 estimates put a first AI product at roughly $5,000 to $50,000 for a lean build and $60,000 to $150,000 or more once it needs logins, several data sources, audit logs and security review. Groovy Web says $5,000 to $50,000 or more, Fitworks says $10,000 to $150,000 or more, and SFAI Labs starts at $15,000. Scope moves the price more than the AI model does. These are market ranges read on 18 October 2026, not FactoryJet prices.
What is an AI MVP?
An AI MVP (minimum viable product) is the smallest version of a product with AI inside it that real users can use to do one real job, so you can learn whether it is worth building further. It connects an AI model to your data, a simple screen and your business rules. It is more than a demo of a model and much less than the finished product.
What does MVP mean in AI?
In AI product work, MVP stands for minimum viable product: the first working version of an AI feature or app that real people use on real data. If you searched "mvp ai meaning" or "what is mvp in ai", this is the sense you want. It has nothing to do with sports awards, and it is a later step than a proof of concept, which only tests whether the AI can do the task at all.
How is an AI MVP different from a proof of concept?
A proof of concept answers one question: can the AI do this task well enough on our data? It is often run by the builder alone and thrown away afterwards. An AI MVP goes to real users. It needs a usable screen, user accounts, error handling and some way to check the answers. A proof of concept is usually shorter and cheaper. Published AI MVP timelines run from 2 weeks for a prototype to 14 weeks or more for a production-ready build.
Can I build an AI MVP for under $10,000?
Yes, for a narrow prototype. Groovy Web puts a one-workflow prototype on a hosted model at $5,000 to $12,000, and Bitsens puts the route of an AI builder tool plus a contract engineer at $5,000 to $15,000. What you get is a test of the idea with thin login and few or no integrations. Product-ready builds with several integrations and your own data sit in higher tiers on every source we read.
How long does it take to build an AI MVP?
Fitworks says 2 to 4 weeks for a validation prototype and 6 to 10 weeks for a focused MVP. Groovy Web says 4 to 8 weeks for a lean MVP and 8 to 14 weeks for a production-ready one. SFAI Labs puts moderate builds at 8 to 14 weeks. Data clean-up, slow access to other systems and a security review are the usual reasons a build runs long.
Why do AI MVP quotes vary so much between agencies?
Because they price different products under the same name. One firm quotes a one-workflow demo, another quotes a multi-user product with logins, billing, audit logs and a security review. Team rates differ too: Clutch reports most AI firms on its site charge $25 to $49 an hour, while Layer3 Labs puts boutique agencies at $125 to $250 an hour. Ask every firm to price the same written scope.
Is an AI MVP more expensive than a regular software MVP?
Usually, yes, though not by as much as people expect. Upsilon, in a guide updated 8 September 2026, puts a conventional MVP at around $25,000 to $75,000 and a generative AI MVP at around $50,000 to $100,000. The extra money goes on data preparation, testing the AI answers against known good results, and guardrails, more than on the AI model itself.
How much is an AI app?
It depends on what the app does with AI. Fitworks puts an internal knowledge assistant at $30,000 to $50,000, a customer-support assistant at $35,000 to $70,000 and an AI workflow agent at $45,000 to $100,000 or more. Cogniq AI puts a single-feature AI tool at about $25,000 to $50,000. A mobile app adds design and app store work on top of the AI part.
How much does generative AI development cost?
For a first product built on an existing model such as GPT, Claude or Gemini, published 2026 ranges run from about $25,000 to $120,000 (Cogniq AI) for a small professional team, with SFAI Labs putting the median mid-complexity AI project at $75,000 to $120,000. Training or fine-tuning your own model pushes the build price up: SFAI Labs says custom model training adds 40 to 80% to a build.
How much does an AI MVP cost in the UK?
Converting the Fitworks ranges at the ECB reference rate of 16 October 2026 (about £0.75 to the dollar), a validation prototype is roughly £7,500 to £18,700, a focused MVP £18,700 to £45,000 and an advanced build £45,000 to £112,500 or more, before VAT. UK firms often quote in pounds directly; see our UK AI cost guide for sterling ranges from UK firms.
How much does it cost to develop an app in Australia?
For an AI app built as an MVP, the Fitworks ranges converted at the ECB rate of 16 October 2026 (about A$1.44 to the US dollar) come to roughly A$14,400 to A$35,900 for a validation prototype, A$35,900 to A$86,200 for a focused MVP and A$86,200 to A$215,600 or more for an advanced build, before GST. Our Australian AI cost guide has local agency figures.
Should I use an AI MVP builder like Lovable, Bolt or Bubble?
Use one to test the idea, and plan for an engineer when real users arrive. Bitsens describes a route where the founder scaffolds the app in Lovable, Bolt or v0 and then hires a contract engineer for 60 to 120 hours to finish login, payments and the AI calls, at $5,000 to $15,000. Its own advice is that a do-it-yourself build is a validation tool for 20 to 50 test users.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency for an AI MVP?
Per hour, a freelancer is usually cheaper. Layer3 Labs puts freelance AI consultants at $75 to $150 an hour and boutique agencies at $125 to $250. The total can still favour a team when the MVP needs design, testing and several integrations at once, because one freelancer works through them in sequence. Compare total price, named people and who owns the code.
How do I find a reliable developer to build an AI MVP for my startup?
Ask three or four firms or freelancers to price the same one-page scope. Then check six things: they show a working demo on a sample of your data, you own the repository from day one, the price is fixed per phase, you know who will write the code, they explain how they test the AI answers, and they say in writing what happens after launch. Drop anyone who cannot show a demo.
Who should own the code for my AI MVP?
You should. Put it in the contract that the code, prompts, test sets and data pipelines belong to you, and that the repository sits in your own GitHub or GitLab account from the first commit. The AI model accounts and cloud accounts should be in your company name too. If the builder holds them, you cannot change supplier without starting over.
Which AI is best for an MVP: OpenAI, Claude or Gemini?
No single model wins every job, so test two on your own examples. OpenAI suggests GPT-6 Astra for complex reasoning and coding, Anthropic suggests Claude Opus 5.5 for most workloads, and Google lists Gemini 4 Argon as its flagship reasoning model with a 1M context window. Pick on answer quality for your task, privacy terms and the systems you already use. Keep the code able to switch models.
How do I build an MVP with AI?
Pick one job worth doing, gather 30 to 50 real examples of it with the right answers, test two hosted models against those examples, build the thinnest screen and the one integration the job needs, add a person to approve anything that changes a record or reaches a customer, then put it in front of five to ten real users. Measure against the answers you collected before you add features.
What should I prepare before asking for an AI MVP quote?
Five things: the one job the MVP must do, written in two or three sentences; a sample of real data, such as 20 to 50 emails, documents or tickets; a list of the systems it must read from or write to; the measure that would make you call it a success; and your deadline. With those, firms can quote the same scope and you can compare their prices fairly.
Do I need my own data to build an AI MVP?
You need a sample of it, even if you have no large dataset. Most AI MVPs in 2026 use an existing model and give it your documents, records or rules at the moment it answers, so a few hundred real documents or a few dozen worked examples are often enough to start. What you do need is permission to use that data and a clear owner for it.
Can an AI MVP connect to HubSpot, Salesforce or QuickBooks?
Yes. HubSpot, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Xero and Shopify all offer APIs that an AI MVP can read from and write to. Each connection adds build and test time. SFAI Labs estimates each integration point adds $5,000 to $15,000 of development effort, and that integrations add 20 to 60% to the base build. Start with the one system the job cannot work without.
What does an AI MVP need for GDPR or privacy rules?
In the UK and EU, plan a data protection impact assessment if the MVP handles personal data, and read the ICO guidance on AI and data protection. In Australia, the OAIC says the Privacy Act applies to all uses of AI involving personal information. In the US, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a useful voluntary checklist. Keep personal data out of public AI chat tools.
Should I pay a fixed price or by the hour for an AI MVP?
A fixed price per phase suits most AI MVPs, because it puts the risk of a slow build on the builder and lets you stop after any phase. Hourly billing suits work where the scope is still unknown, such as an early discovery sprint. Either way, agree a written scope, a demo date and what counts as done before work starts.
What happens after the AI MVP launches?
You watch real users, fix what breaks and decide whether the next phase is worth building. FactoryJet fixes defects inside the build price for a cover period agreed before work starts. After that, support is optional: each change is quoted and approved, with no monthly minimum. If you want, we can keep managing the servers, AI models, APIs and maintenance so your team does not have to.
Can I see a working demo before I pay for the full build?
With FactoryJet, yes. We show working software on a sample of your own data before you sign for the build, so you judge the AI on your documents and your rules instead of a slide. Each phase is then scoped, priced and signed on its own, and FactoryJet quotes a fixed price in writing after a short scoping call.
