SEO services for Australian businesses

We measure before we sell. That means telling you which search terms have real Australian demand, which competitors are genuinely beatable, and which parts of a search plan are not worth your money.

In August 2026 we measured 103 Australian commercial search results in detail: volume, competition, whether an AI Overview appears, and how many other websites link to each business currently holding a first-page position. Most of what follows on this page comes from that work rather than from opinion, and the parts where the answer was unfavourable are on the page too.

Answer first

What SEO services actually do, in the order that pays back

SEO services make a website more likely to appear when Australians search for what it sells. The work divides into three parts: repairing the technical faults that stop search engines reading the site, building pages that answer what buyers actually type and connecting them to a correct Google Business Profile, and earning references from other sites so Google treats the business as credible. Done in that order, the cheap fast work funds the slow expensive work. Done in reverse, which is how it is commonly sold, you pay for the slowest lever first.

The five stages of search work and how quickly each pays back
StageWhat it involvesTypical payback
01Technical repairFix what stops search engines reading the site: blocked pages, leftover noindex tags, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, broken internal links, and duplicate versions of the same page competing with each other.Weeks
02Google Business ProfileClaim, verify, categorise specifically, set service areas honestly, add real photographs, answer reviews. For a local business this is usually the single highest-return hour of work available anywhere in a search plan.Weeks
03Consistent business detailsMake your name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear, including old directory listings you have forgotten about. Inconsistency quietly holds back local ranking and never announces itself.Weeks to months
04Pages built on verified demandWrite pages for terms that have real Australian volume, checked against advertising data rather than impression counts. One strong page per service beats five thin ones on the same topic. One to two quarters
05Earned links and mentionsPublish things worth referencing, sponsor genuinely, build supplier and sector relationships. This is the slowest lever and the one that decides whether you can compete on a head term at all.Quarters to years

Google itself says some changes take effect within a few hours while others take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. Any Australian agency quoting you a date for a ranking position is working against what the search engine publishes about its own behaviour.

What we measured

Australian search in August 2026, including the parts that do not suit us

We ran 297 Australian keywords through Google Ads volume data, then measured 103 of the resulting search results in detail. Two findings are worth your attention before you spend anything on search in this country.

One: AI Overviews are rare in Australia, but only on some topics

An AI Overview is the summary Google increasingly places above the ordinary results. When one appears, fewer people click through to any website. Across all 103 Australian terms we tested, one appeared on 34%. That average hides the useful detail, which is that the rate depends almost entirely on the subject.

How often an AI Overview appeared, by service line, Australia, August 2026
Type of searchAI Overview shownWhat it means for you
Web design13%Almost every ordinary ranking still earns the click.
Local SEO terms20%Largely unaffected, and the largest pool of volume.
E-commerce build36%Mixed. Worth checking the specific term first.
AI agents and automation71%Most of the click is absorbed above the results.
Agentic commerce75%Reading audience rather than a buying one.
AI SEO and GEO terms100%Every term tested. Also close to zero Australian volume.

The practical reading: if you sell web design, trades, professional services or anything local, Australian search is currently a better place to invest than the American equivalent, where these summaries are far more common. If you sell anything with the word AI in the search term, the opposite is true here as well as there.

Two: some Australian cities are reachable and some are not

Ranking is decided largely by how many other websites reference yours. We counted that figure for every business holding a first-page position on the main search term in each capital, and compared the weakest of them against our own earned total of 28. The result decided which city pages we built and which we did not.

Where we are not competing, and why we say so

Sydney, Perth and the Gold Coast carry the largest search volumes in the country and we have not built pages for them. The weakest business holding a first-page position measured 119 linking domains in Sydney, 125 in Perth and 136 on the Gold Coast, against our 28. Building pages aimed at those terms today would produce pages that cannot rank.

We mention it because the same arithmetic applies to you. If an agency proposes to win you a Sydney head term, ask what the current first page looks like and how many sites link to the weakest business on it. If they cannot answer, they have not measured, and the plan is a hope rather than a forecast.

Next step

Want the same measurement done on your own search terms?

Tell us what you sell and where. We check real Australian search volume for those terms, look at who currently holds the first page, and count how many sites link to the weakest of them. You get the numbers whether or not they favour us.

How it runs

What the work looks like, and what it needs from you

The right-hand column is the one worth reading before you commit to anything. Search work fails more often through missing input from the client than through anything the agency does, and the two stages that need you most are the two that cannot be outsourced: subject matter review, and introductions.

The stages of a search engagement, how long each takes, and what it needs from you
StageTypical lengthWhat happensWhat we need from you
Free reviewA few daysWe crawl the site, check the Google Business Profile, read your Search Console data if you grant access, and look at who currently holds the positions you want. You get a written note on the three biggest problems.Site address, and read access to Search Console if you have it.
Demand checkA few daysBefore anything is scoped, we verify that Australians actually search for what you sell, using Google Ads volume rather than impression counts. This is the step that decides whether there is a project at all, and sometimes the answer is that there is not.A list of what you sell and where you sell it.
Written scopeAbout a weekA document naming each piece of work, what it should achieve, roughly when, and what it depends on from you. Repair work is priced as fixed milestones. Ongoing content and link work is separate, so you can take one without the other.Time to read it properly and push back on anything vague.
Technical repairWeeksThe finite work: indexing faults, speed, structure, internal linking, duplicate pages. This is where the fastest movement usually comes from, and it ends rather than continuing indefinitely.Access to the site and hosting, or an introduction to whoever holds it.
Content and localA quarter or twoPages built on verified terms, and the Google Business Profile corrected and maintained. We write drafts, you correct the things only you would know, we publish.Subject matter review. Nobody outside your business can supply this.
Earned linksQuartersThe slow lever, and the one that decides whether a competitive head term is reachable at all. Publishing things worth citing, genuine sponsorship, supplier and sector relationships.Introductions, and patience. This is the part with no shortcut.

Six things we will not do

Ask any agency you are considering the same question. One that cannot name a single thing it refuses has either not thought about it or is willing to do things that will cost you later.

None of these are positions we took for marketing reasons. Each one comes from cleaning up after the opposite choice, usually for a business that inherited the problem from a previous supplier and had no idea it was there until the traffic fell away. The suburb pages are the most common of the six by a distance, and the bought links are the most expensive to undo.

We do not buy links, and we will not work alongside someone who does

Paid link schemes breach Google spam policies. The recovery from a manual penalty costs more than the links did and takes months, during which the site earns less than before anyone started.

We do not publish thin pages for every suburb

It is the oldest tactic in local search and it stopped working years ago. It also creates dozens of near-identical pages that compete with each other, which is a problem you then pay someone to unpick.

We do not promise a position on a date

Google publishes that some changes take hours and others take months. Any date attached to a ranking is invented, and the agencies who give you one are counting on you having forgotten by the time it passes.

We do not hold your domain, hosting or accounts

Everything is in your name from day one. If a supplier will not agree to that, it is because leaving is meant to be difficult, and that tells you what the relationship is built on.

We do not build pages for terms with no Australian volume

We measured 297 Australian keywords in August 2026 and 77 of them returned nothing at all, including every localised AI SEO term. Building against those would have produced pages nobody could ever find.

We do not take the work when search is not your problem

If your traffic is fine and your enquiries are not, more traffic will not fix it. That is a conversion problem, and selling you search work for it would be taking money for something that cannot help.

Questions

25 questions Australians actually ask about SEO

Every question below is one Google itself shows Australian searchers, taken from People Also Ask data collected in August 2026. We have not invented any of them, including the ones whose honest answer costs us work.

The basics

What does SEO mean?

Search engine optimisation. It is the work of making a website more likely to appear when someone searches for what that site offers. In practice it covers three separate things: making sure search engines can read the site, making sure the pages answer what people actually search for, and getting other websites to reference yours. Those three need different skills and pay back on very different timescales.

What do SEO services actually do?

Repair the technical faults that stop search engines reading and indexing your pages. Build pages that answer what buyers type, and connect them to a correct Google Business Profile where local search matters. Then earn mentions and links from real sites so Google treats you as credible. Good agencies do those in that order because that is the order that pays back fastest.

What are the four types of SEO?

They are usually split into technical, on-page, off-page and local. Technical is whether search engines can crawl and index the site. On-page is the content and structure of each page. Off-page is mostly links and mentions from elsewhere. Local is your Google Business Profile and the consistency of your business details. Most Australian small businesses get the largest early return from technical and local.

What is the difference between SEO and technical SEO?

Technical SEO asks whether search engines can reach, read and index your pages at all. The broader discipline asks whether those pages deserve to rank once they can. Technical work is largely finite and one-off. Content and authority work is ongoing. Doing the second before the first is the most reliable way to waste money on search.

What is local SEO vs SEO?

They are judged on different things. Local results are ranked largely on your Google Business Profile, how close you are to the searcher, and whether your business details agree across the web. Ordinary results are ranked on the page itself and who links to it. A suburban clinic gets more from an hour on its Business Profile. A national supplier gets more from an hour on its service pages.

Does it work

Does SEO work for small businesses?

It works well when a small business has a clear service and a defined area. Local search is where a small business can genuinely outrank a larger competitor, because proximity to the searcher and a well-kept listing carry real weight. It works poorly when the business is too broad to describe in a search term, or when nobody is searching for what is being sold.

How long does SEO take to show results in 2026?

Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. In our Australian work, technical repairs and Google Business Profile corrections often move things within weeks. Competing for a capital city head term against agencies with a decade of links is a matter of quarters.

How to tell if your SEO is working?

Agree two numbers before the work starts: enquiries attributed to organic search, and impressions on a named list of commercial terms. Both live in Search Console and Analytics, which you own and keep. If a monthly report leads with rankings and buries enquiries, ask why. Positions are the easiest number to make look good and the least connected to revenue.

Is an SEO agency worth it?

Only when real demand exists for what you sell and your site is not currently meeting it. We verify volume against Google Ads data before recommending anything, and when the numbers do not support the work we say so. In Australia specifically, we found several service categories with almost no search volume at all, and building pages for those would have earned nothing.

Is SEO still relevant in 2026?

In Australia, more so than in the United States right now. When we measured Australian search results in August 2026, AI Overviews appeared on only around 13% of web design queries and 20% of local SEO queries. On the equivalent American searches they appear on most. That means an Australian organic position still earns the click rather than losing it to a summary above the results.

Cost

How much does SEO cost in Australia?

It tracks the size of the problem rather than a standard package. A site with sound structure that needs its local listing corrected and a few pages written is a small job. A site search engines cannot crawl properly is a much bigger one. Ask any agency to price the diagnosis separately from the ongoing work, so you can find out what is actually wrong without committing to a year of anything.

How much should SEO cost for a small business?

Less than most retainers assume, if the work is scoped to the actual fault. Many Australian small businesses need a one-off technical repair and a properly set up Google Business Profile, then very little for months. Being sold a large monthly retainer before anyone has diagnosed the problem is the most common way money gets wasted on search in this country.

Is it worth paying for backlinks?

No, and the reason is arithmetic rather than principle. A bought link stops working the moment Google devalues the source, which it does continuously, so you are renting a ranking rather than owning one. If the source is penalised instead of merely devalued, the damage lands on your site and the recovery takes months of work you also pay for. Earned references cost more up front and do not carry either risk.

AI and search

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No, though it is changing and the change is uneven by country and by topic. In Australia we measured AI Overviews appearing on around a third of commercial terms overall, but almost never on web design and local service searches, and almost always on searches containing the word AI. So the answer depends entirely on what you sell. For most Australian local service businesses, ordinary search is still where the clicks are.

Can SEO be done by AI?

Parts of it. AI is genuinely useful for drafting, for finding patterns in crawl data, and for summarising a competitor set. It is unreliable for the judgement calls: which terms are worth pursuing, whether a page deserves to exist, and whether a link is worth having. Sites that hand the whole job to a model tend to produce a lot of pages and very little traffic.

Is SEO replaced by AI?

Not replaced, but the target is widening. Being found now means appearing in ordinary results, in AI summaries, and in the answers assistants give. The good news is that the work overlaps heavily: pages with clear structure, direct answers and verifiable facts do well in all three. Pages padded with adjectives do badly in all three.

What is an AI SEO agency?

Usually an agency positioning itself around optimising for AI assistants and AI summaries rather than only for classic search results. Worth knowing before you search for one in Australia: we measured every localised version of that term here in August 2026 and found essentially no search volume. Australians looking for this work search for SEO. The label is largely an agency-facing one at the moment.

Doing it yourself

Can I do my own SEO for my business?

Yes, and you should do part of it regardless. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, keeping your business details consistent, and asking customers for reviews are the highest-value tasks available and none needs technical skill. What gets hard is technical diagnosis and earning links, where tooling and time start to matter more than effort.

Can a beginner do SEO?

A beginner can do local SEO competently within a few weeks of reading. Google publishes a starter guide that covers the fundamentals honestly and without selling anything. Where beginners typically go wrong is buying links, publishing large volumes of thin pages, or chasing search terms with no real volume behind them. Those three mistakes account for most self-inflicted damage.

Should I hire an SEO agency or do it myself?

A split usually works best. Do the local basics in-house, because you know the business and the tasks are straightforward. Bring in help for technical audits, content at volume, and earning links. If you have a marketer or a developer already, an advisory arrangement where someone sets direction and your team executes is often better value than a full retainer.

Why is Google not crawling my website?

Check in this order: a robots.txt rule blocking the pages, a noindex tag left over from a staging site, content that only appears once JavaScript runs, no internal links pointing at the page, or a site too new to have been reached yet. Search Console names the specific cause in its page indexing report, and that is the fastest place to start rather than guessing.

Google Business Profile

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Entirely. Creating, verifying and maintaining one costs nothing and there is no ongoing charge. If someone calls claiming your listing will be suspended unless you pay, it is a scam, and these calls are common in Australia. Google Ads is a separate paid product, and buying it has no effect on your free listing in either direction.

How can I get my business to show up on Google Maps?

Create a Google Business Profile and verify it, which is the step most people stall on. Verification is by phone, email, video or postcard depending on the business type. Then complete every field, choose the most specific primary category available, and add real photographs. Ranking on Maps depends heavily on how close you are to the searcher, so location does a lot of the work.

Can anyone make a Google Business Profile?

Only a business that makes in-person contact with customers, either at a location it controls or by travelling to them. A business operating entirely online with no face-to-face contact does not qualify under Google guidelines. Setting one up anyway usually ends in a suspension, and suspensions are considerably harder to reverse than they are to avoid.

Why is my business not showing up on Google?

Most often the profile is unverified, duplicates an older listing, or has been suspended for a guidelines breach, commonly a service-area business displaying an address it should have hidden. It can also be that you are searching from far away, since Maps results move with the searcher. Check the profile status, then look for duplicates, then check your categories.
